MARK 16:1-20
LESSON #26
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RESURRECTION

  • MEMORY VERSE: MAR 16:15

  • MAR 16:1-8 THE RESURRECTION (MAT 18:-11 LUK 24:1-12 JOH 20:1-18)
    • NO ONE GOSPEL CONTAINS ALL THE EVENTS OF THE RESURRECTION. THEREFORE, WE MUST PUT ALL THE GOSPELS TOGETHER TO GET THE FULL PICTURE.
    • THE JEWISH SABBATH ENDED AT SUNDOWN ON SATURDAY. THE SHOPS OPENED AND THE SAME WOMEN WHO STOOD AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS BOUGHT SPICES TO ANOINT JESUS’ BODY. ON SUNDAY MORNING AFTER THE CRUCIFIXION, THESE WOMEN APPROACHED THE TOMB WHERE JESUS WAS LAID.
      • HOWEVER, MARY OF BETHANY, BEFORE THE CRUCIFIXION, HAD ALREADY ANOINTED JESUS’ BODY. (MAR 14:8)
    • THE ORDER OF EVENTS:
      • =1= AN EARTHQUAKE OCCURRED (MAT 28:2)
      • =2= THE SOLDIERS GUARDING THE TOMB HAD BECOME UNCONSCIOUS. THEY AWAKE AND FLEE. (MAT 28:2-4)
      • =3= AN ANGEL OPENS THE TOMB. (MAT 28:2
      • =4= THREE WOMEN, MARY MAGDALENE, MARY, THE MOTHER OF JESUS, AND MARY SALOME COME TO THE TOMB TO ANOINT JESUS’ BODY.
        • THEY ARE SURPRISED THE TOMB IS OPEN.
        • THEY ENCOUNTER A MAN IN A WHITE GARMENT IN THE TOMB WHO TELLS THEM THAT JESUS IS RISEN.
          • WHO DO YOU THINK IS THE YOUNG MAN CLOTHED IN A LONG WHITE GARMENT? (MAR 16:5)
            • HE IS THE ANGEL WHO OPENED THE TOMB.
      • =5= MARY MAGDALENE RUNS TO TELL PETER AND JOHN. (JOH 20:1-2)
        • THE STRANGE PHRASE IN MAR 16:7:
          • NOTICE THAT THE ANGEL TELLS MARY TO TELL THE DISCIPLES AND PETER. PETER IS ONE OF THE DISCIPLES BUT HE IS SEPARATED OUT BY THIS PHRASE. WHY?
            • REMEMBER THAT PETER HAD DENIED JESUS. AT THIS TIME HE WOULD BE FEELING DESPONDENT, FILLED WITH GUILT AND REMORSE, AND UNACCEPTABLE TO THE OTHER DISCIPLES.
              • GOD WANTED PETER TO KNOW THAT HE WAS STILL ACCEPTED.
      • =6= MEANWHILE THE OTHER WOMEN ENTER DEEPER INTO THE TOMB TO SEE THAT IT WAS EMPTY. (MAT 28:8)
      • =7= PETER, JOHN, AND MARY MAGDALENE ARRIVE AT THE TOMB. (JOH 20:4-10)
        • JOHN ARRIVES FIRST BUT HESITATES WHILE PETER ENTERS THE TOMB AND SEES THE EMPTY GRAVE CLOTHES. EXACTLY WHAT DID HE SE?
          • HE DID NOT SEE AN UNWRAPPED CLOTH. HE SAW THE CLOTH STILL IN THE SHAPE OF A BODY, BUT IT WAS EMPTY.
      • =8= JOHN AND PETER SAW THAT THE TOMB WAS EMPTY AND LEFT. (JOH 20:4-10)
      • =9= MARY MAGDALENE REMAINED AT THE TOMB WEEPING. THEN JESUS REVEALED HIMSELF TO HER. (JOH 20:11-18)
        • HE TELLS HER NOT TO TOUCH HIM.
      • =10= WHILE THE OTHER WOMEN WERE ON THEIR WAY TO TELL THE OTHER DISCIPLES, THEY MET JESUS. (MAT 28:9-10)
    • THE ADMONITION:
      • THE FIRST WITNESSES TO OBSERVE THE EMPTY TOMB ARE INSTRUCTED:
        • …TO SEE AND BELIEVE.
        • …TO GO AND TELL OTHERS
        • …TO REJOICE.
          • WE HAVE THE SAME ADMONITION:
            • WE SEE THE TRUTH ABOUT JESUS AND THE RESURRECTION IN THE WORD OF GOD. BY FAITH WE ARE TO BELIEVE THAT HE IS RISEN.
            • WE ARE TO GO AND TELL OTHERS THE GOOD NEWS OF THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST.
            • WE ARE TO REJOICE IN WORSHIP FOR WHAT GOD HAS DONE THROUGH JESUS FOR US.
    • THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RESURRECTION:
      • THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST IS THE BASIC FOUNDATION OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH.
        • READ ROM 8:11
        • READ 1COR 15:11-23
          • BECAUSE HE IS RAISED FROM THE DEAD, SO WILL WE BE RAISED FROM THE DEAD.
            • IF JESUS HAD BEEN CRUCIFIED AND NOT RAISED FROM THE DEAD, THEN THE PAYMENT FOR OUR SINS WOULD NOT BE COMPLETE.
              • JESUS’ RESURRECTION FROM THE DEAD IS THE SIGN THAT GOD RECEIVED THE PAYMENT FOR OUR SINS. AND HE REWARDS THAT PAYMENT WITH ETERNAL LIFE FOR US.
            • IT WAS THE HOLY SPIRIT THAT RAISED JESUS FROM THE DEAD. THE BIBLE SAYS THAT WE HAVE THAT SAME POWER AND PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WITHIN US. SOME DAY THAT SAME HOLY SPIRIT WILL RAISE US FROM THE DEAD. (ROM 8:11)
  • THE CONTROVERSY OVER MAR 16:9-20:
    • SOME OF THE NEWER VERSIONS OF THE BIBLE END THE BOOK OF MARK WITH VERSE 8. THEY DELETE VERSES 9-20 ALTOGETHER.
    • SOME OF THE NEWER VERSIONS OF THE BIBLE INCLUDE VERSES 9-20 BUT HAVE A FOOTNOTE THAT “THE BETTER MANUSCRIPTS DO NOT INCLUDE THESE VERSES.”
      • WHAT ARE THESE SO-CALLED, “BETTER” MANUSCRIPTS?
        • THEY ARE CALLED, “MANUSCRIPT ALEPH” AND “MANUSCRIPT VATICANUS”.
          • THEY ARE CATHOLIC DOCUMENT FRAGMENTS OBTAINED FROM A GNOSTIC LIBRARY IN EGYPT.
      • WHY ARE THEY, IN TRUTH, NOT BETTER MANUSCRIPTS?
        • THEY ARE FRAGMENTS OF DOCUMENTS.
        • THEY ARE A SMALL MINORITY OF DOCUMENTS.
          • THE MAJORITY OF DOCUMENTS FOUND IN AND AROUND THE PROMISED LAND CONTAIN VERSES 9-20.
    • FOR THE PURPOSES OF OUR STUDY, WE WILL CONSIDER MAR 16:9-20 AS PART OF THE ORIGINAL WORD OF GOD. HERE ARE SOME REASONS WHY WE WILL CONSIDER IT AS PART OF THE INSPIRED WORD OF GOD:
      • THE MAJORITY OF MANUSCRIPTS CONTAIN THESE VERSES.
      • THE “TEXTUS RECEPTUS” FROM WHICH THE KING JAMES BIBLE COMES CONTAIN THESE VERSES.
      • BASED ON LOGIC, TO END THE BOOK OF MARK WITH VERSE 8…
        • …SEEMS TO BE AN UNUSUALLY ABRUPT ENDING.
        • …SEEMS TO END THE BOOK ON A NEGATIVE NOTE OF FEAR.
        • …SEEMS TO OVERLOOK THE VERIFICATION BY MANY WITNESSES CONCERNING THE FACT OF THE RESURRECTION.
        • …LEAVES VERSE 7 UNFULFILLED WHERE THE ANGEL SAYS THAT JESUS WILL MEET THE DISCIPLES IN GALILEE.
        • …LEAVES THE BOOK WITHOUT A FUTURE PURPOSE AND GOAL FOR THIS LITTLE BAND OF DISCIPLES.
  • READ MAR 16:9-14 THE POST RESURRECTION APPEARANCES:
    • THERE WERE 5 APPEARANCES IN WHICH 16 PEOPLE SAW JESUS ON THE DAY OF RESURRECTION:
      • =1= MARY MAGDALENE (MAR 16:9-11)
      • =2= THE TWO MARY’S RETURNING FROM THE TOMB (MAT 28:8-10)
      • =3= PETER (LUK 24:34)
      • =4= THE TWO DISCIPLES ON THE WAY TO EMMAUS (MAR 16:12 LUK 24:13-32)
        • READ LUK 24:13-16
          • WHY DID THE TWO MEN ON THE ROAD TO EMMAUS NOT RECOGNIZE JESUS?
            • NOTICE THAT MAR 16:12 SAYS THAT JESUS APPEARED TO THEM “IN ANOTHER FORM”.
              • IT IS NOT CLEAR EXACTLY WHAT THAT MEANS BUT IT SEEMS TO MEAN THAT HE DID NOT LOOK EXACTLY THE SAME AS BEFORE, SO THEY COULD NOT RECOGNIZE HIM.
      • =5= THE 10 DISCIPLES (WITHOUT THOMAS) (LUK 24:26-43)
    • THERE WERE OTHER APPEARANCES DURING THE 50 DAYS BETWEEN THE RESURRECTION AND THE DAY OF PENTECOST:
      • =6= THE 11 DISCIPLES (INCLUDING THOMAS) (MAR 16:13-14 JOH 20:26-31)
      • =7= THE SEVEN DISCIPLES BESIDE THE SEA OF GALILEE (JOH 21)
      • =8= THE APOSTLES PLUS OVER 500 BELIEVERS (MAT 28:16-20)
      • =9= JAMES, JESUS’ HALF BROTHER (1COR 15:7)
      • =10= A LARGE MULTITUDE AT JESUS’ ASCENSION INTO HEAVEN. (LUK 24:44-53 ACT 1:3-12)
  • READ MAR 16:15-20 THE GREAT COMMISSION
    • WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF THE GREAT COMMISSION IN VERSES 15-20?
      • =1= THE GOSPEL MUST BE PREACHED TO ALL PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS FOR ALL PEOPLE.
      • =2= PEOPLE NEED TO GET SAVED AND WILL THEN BE BAPTIZED.
        • ENTRANCE INTO THE KINGDOM OF GOD AT THE POINT OF SALVATION IS DIFFERENT THAN WATER BAPTISM.
          • WATER BAPTISM DOES NOT SAVE ANYONE. FAITH IN JESUS AS THE MESSIAH SAVES A PERSON. EVEN IF A BELIEVER IN JESUS CHRIST IS NOT BAPTIZED IN WATER, HE IS STILL SAVED.
            • HOWEVER, THE NEW TESTAMENT ALWAYS LINKS BELIEF AND BAPTISM BECAUSE A NEW BELIEVER DESIRED TO BE OBEDIENT AND BE BAPTIZED. THEREFORE, WE DON’T SEE ANY BELIEVERS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT THAT WERE NOT BAPTIZED IN WATER.
              • WATER BAPTISM IS THE NATURAL PROGRESSION OF EVENTS FOLLOWING BELIEF.
              • WATER BAPTISM IS THE OUTWARD TESTIMONIAL DEMONSTRATION OF AN INWARD BORN AGAIN TRANSACTION THAT OCCURRED BY FAITH.

    • THE SIGNS FOLLOWING THE GREAT COMMISSION (17-18):
      • THE CASTING OUT OF DEMONS.
      • SPEAKING IN TONGUES.
      • TAKING UP SERPENTS.
      • DRINKING ANY DEADLY POISON.
      • LAYING HANDS ON THE SICK AND SEEING THEM RECOVER.
        • MANY NEW TESTAMENT BELIEVERS TODAY CONSIDER THAT MANY OF THESE SIGNS PASSED AWAY WITH THE 12 DISCIPLES.
        • MANY NEW TESTAMENT BELIEVERS TODAY CONSIDER THAT THESE SIGNS ARE STILL VALID.
          • THE IMPORTANT POINT IS THAT THE POWER OF GOD IS WITH BELIEVERS TODAY.
            • GOD GIVES THE BELIEVER POWER AND, IF NECESSARY AND IN HIS WILL, GOD GIVES THE BELIEVER MIRACLES WHEN THEY WILL FURTHER THE PREACHING AND THE RECEIVING OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD IN A PERSON’S HEART.
  • APPLICATION:
    • THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST IS THE KEYSTONE TO THE CHRISTIAN FAITH.
      • MARK AND THE OTHER GOSPELS TELL US THAT MANY OF THE DISCIPLES DID NOT AT FIRST BELIEVE THE FACT OF THE RESURRECTION. (MAR 16:11, 13-14)
      • IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BELIEVE IN JESUS AS THE MESSIAH WHO BORE OUR SINS WITHOUT ALSO BELIEVING IN HIS RESURRECTION.
        • WE HAVE SEEN IN THIS LESSON THAT IT IS THE RESURRECTION THAT VERIFIES THAT THE PURPOSE OF THE CRUCIFIXION WAS FULFILLED.
        • WE HAVE SEEN IN THIS LESSON THAT IS BELIEF IN THE RESURRECTION THAT GIVES US HOPE OF OUR OWN RESURRECTION TO ETERNAL LIFE.
  • SUMMARY OF THE BOOK OF MARK:
    • MARK HAS GIVEN US A COMPACT PICTURE OF JESUS AND HIS MINISTRY. THE CRUCIFIXION AND THE RESURRECTION VERIFY MARK’S VIEW OF JESUS AS THE BURDEN BEARER OF MAN’S SINS.
      • MARK USED EVERY EVENT IN HIS GOSPEL TO PROPEL THE READER TO THE FINAL SCENE OF THE CRUCIFIXION AND THE RESURRECTION SO THAT HE MIGHT UNDERSTAND THAT EACH EVENT OCCURRED UNDER GOD’S CONTROL AND IN HIS PLAN.
      • MARK USED EVERY EVENT IN HIS GOSPEL TO CONTRAST THE GOOD AND THE EVIL SO THAT THE READER MIGHT COME TO A RIGHT DECISION ABOUT WHO JESUS CHRIST IS.
      • MARK USED EVERY EVENT IN HIS GOSPEL TO CONTRAST THOSE WHO BELIEVE WITH THOSE WHO DO NOT BELIEVE.
    • THE IMPORTANCE OF AN ACCURATE PERCEPTION:
      • WE ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE SAYING, “SEEING IS BELIEVING”. HOWEVER, A MORE ACCURATE SAYING ACCORDING TO SCRIPTURE IS “PERCEIVING ACCURATELY IS BELIEVING”.
        • IT IS ONLY THROUGH THE INTERVENING ACTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT THAT ANYONE CAN PERCEIVE ACCURATELY WHO JESUS REALLY IS.
          • READ 1COR 12:3 AND MAR 4:12
            • THE LIGHT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT MUST BE APPLIED TO SEE AND KNOW JESUS PERSONALLY.

THE END.GOD BLESS YOU!
