Lesson #30
THE REDEMPTION

  • Memory verse: Joh 18:37b “…To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice..”
  • The difference between the gospel of John and the other gospels in regards to the crucifixion and resurrection are these:
    • The other gospels present the humanity of Christ while the gospel of John presents the deity of Christ.
    • The other gospels present the suffering of Christ while the gospel of John presents the glory of Christ.
  • A broad over-view of Jesus’ redemptive act:

THE PASSOVER AS A TYPE OF REDEMPTION THROUGH CHRIST

Rev 21:1-3, 22

  • Read Joh 18:1-12 and corresponding scriptures Mat 26:47-56 Mar 14:43-52 and Luk 22:39-53
    • Jesus spent the night outdoors in the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives.
      • You will notice that John does not tell us of Jesus’ agony in the Garden of Gethsemane during the night when Jesus prayed alone.
    • It was Jesus’ common practice to stay in this area, of which Judas knew exactly where Jesus would be. (2)
      • The band of men who came to arrest Jesus. A band is a tenth part of a legion and consisted of about 500 men. (3) However, there was also a contingent of a Jewish temple guard that accompanied the Roman soldiers. Therefore there were up to 600 soldiers present.
    • John specifically tells us that Jesus knew what was about to happen. (4)
      • “…I am he…”
      • (5)

        • Jesus makes another “I am” statement of deity as the soldiers come to arrest Him.
          • How do we know this was a specific statement of deity?
            • “…they went backward, and fell to the ground.”
            • (6)

              • Those who came to arrest Jesus physically felt the power of His presence and glory.
                • This scripture specifically tells us who was in control…Jesus Christ, the Son of God. No one could have arrested Jesus without Him submitting to it.
              • This manifestation of the power of Jesus Christ at His arrest was prophesied in Psa 27:1-2.

    • “…if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:”
    • (8)

      • Jesus is so much in control that He tells the soldiers who to arrest and who not to arrest.
        • It is very interesting that none of the disciples were arrested or taken as witnesses against Jesus. Not even Simon Peter was arrested for drawing a sword. (10)
          • The fact that none were arrested but instead scattered also was a fulfillment of prophecy. (Zec 13:7)
            • The other gospels tells us that the disciples fled when Jesus was arrested. (Mat 26:56 Mar 14:50)

    • “That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.”
    • (9)

      • Jesus refers to statements He made in His prayer in Joh 17:12 and in Joh 6:39.
    • Peter was willing to die for the Lord, (10) but this was not God’s plan. Jesus knew He must submit Himself to the arrest and the crucifixion to fulfill God’s plan for man’s redemption.
      • John tells us that Peter cut off the ear of Malchus, but he does not tell us that Jesus healed the ear. Dr. Luke tells us of this little miracle in the midst of a confusing situation. (Luk 22:50-51)

    • “…the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?”
    • (11)

      • The Bible refers to several types of “cups”:
“I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD.” Psa 116:13 The cup of salvation
“neither shall men give them the cup of consolation to drink” Jer 16:7 The cup of consolation
“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.” Psa 23:5 The cup of joy
“The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.” Psa 16:5 The cup of blessing (1Cor 10:16)
“Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.” Isa 51:17 The cup of God’s fury and trembling (Psa 75:8)
“Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD’S hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad..” (Jer 51:7) The golden cup of worldly lust (1Cor 10:21)
“Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria.” Eze 23:33 The cup of astonishment and desolation
“For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death till he come.” 1Cor 11:26 The cup of the Lord’s communion
“Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.” Psa 11:6 The cup of judgment (Jer 25:15)

    • Jesus drank of the cup of judgment when sin was judged on the cross. (Mat 26:39)
      • Jesus drank from the cup of judgment of sin for all mankind. However, those who do not take advantage of what Jesus did for us, must drink of this cup for themselves.

      • The fulfillment of some of the prophecies during Jesus’ final week:

      • Summary:
        • In the gospel of John, what references do you find to Jesus’ spiritual nature equal with God?
          • Jesus knew all things. (4)
          • Jesus said “I am” (5)
          • Those who came to arrest Him fell to the ground. (6)
        • What does Joh 18:1-12 tell you about:
          • Divine sovereignty?
            • Nothing is by chance in God’s plan. All details were planned and under His control.
            • Inherent in the idea of God’s divine sovereignty is the concept of a plan and a purpose that is in the process of being fulfilled.according to prophecy.
          • Submission?
            • Jesus was so totally submitted to God’s plan that the temptation of Simon Peter’s efforts to take control and save Jesus from this, was never considered by Jesus.
          • The cost of discipleship?
            • The believer’s submission to Jesus means that you do things God’s way, which may be just the opposite of what you might think.

        • Preparation for Joh 18:13-40
          • Read Joh 18:13-27
            • Why do you think strong and boisterous Peter reacted the way he did?

                  • What were the religious charges against Jesus?
                  • How valid were these charges?
                  • How serious were these charges?
                  • Did Jesus receive a fair religious trial? In what ways was it fair and in what ways was it unfair?

              • Memory Verse: Joh 18:37b “Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.”
