ISAIAH 6
Lesson #06
THE CALL TO HOLINESS AND SERVICE
- MEMORY VERSE: ISA 6:8
- READ ISA 6:1-13 A VISION OF THE LORD AND A CALL TO MINISTRY – 742 BC
- KING UZZIAH DIED. THE NATIONAL GLORY OF ISRAEL DIED OUT WITH THIS KING AND WAS NEVER FULLY REGAINED TO THIS DAY.
- AS WE HAVE SEEN IN THE FIRST 4 CHAPTERS OF ISAIAH, THE NATIONAL OUTLOOK WAS PRETTY BLEAK. WHEN THE OUTLOOK IS BLEAK, WHERE DO YOU LOOK? YOU LOOK UP. THIS IS WHAT ISAIAH DID.
- WHY IS THIS VISION OF THE LORD ON HIS THRONE IMPORTANT WHEN YOU KNOW ABOUT THE COMING BABYLONIAN CAPTIVITY?
- WHEN BELIEVERS KEEP THEIR FOCUS ON THE LORD IN TIMES OF SEVERE TROUBLE, THEY NEED AN ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE TO SEE THEM THROUGH. LOOKING UP TO GOD GIVES THE BELIEVER THAT PERSPECTIVE, THAT THERE IS MORE THAN THE CURRENT SITUATION. THERE IS AN ETERNITY IN GODS KINGDOM.
- THE FOUR STAGES OF ISAIAHS EXPERIENCE WITH GOD
- #1 HE SAW THE LORD. (1-4)
- ONLY HERE IN ISAIAH ARE THE SERAPHIM MENTIONED BY NAME IN SCRIPTURE. PERHAPS THEY ARE THE SAME CREATURES DESCRIBED AS “THE LIVING CREATURES” IN REV 4:6-9.
- WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE SERAPHIM?
- THEIR NAME MEANS “BURNING”.
- THEY ARE CONCERNED WITH THE HOLINESS OF GOD. THEY CRY HOLY, HOLY, HOLY.
- ONE HOLY FOR EACH MEMBER OF THE TRINITY.
- THEY HAVE 6 WINGS
- TWO COVERING THE FACE THAT THEY MIGHT NOT LOOK UPON GOD = HUMILITY.
- TWO COVERING THE FEET THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE REVERENCE FOR GOD.
- TWO WITH WHICH TO FLY = AVAILABILITY TO GOD.
- FROM REV 4:6-9 WE SEE 4 FACES THAT REPRESENT THE MESSAGES OF THE FOUR GOSPELS:
- =1= LIKE A LION = MATTHEW
- =2= LIKE AN OX = MARK
- =3= LIKE A MAN = LUKE
- =4= LIKE AN EAGLE = JOHN
- WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE SERAPHIM?
- ONLY HERE IN ISAIAH ARE THE SERAPHIM MENTIONED BY NAME IN SCRIPTURE. PERHAPS THEY ARE THE SAME CREATURES DESCRIBED AS “THE LIVING CREATURES” IN REV 4:6-9.
- #2 HE SAW HIMSELF IN RELATION TO GOD. (5-7)
- WHEN MAN SEES GODS HOLINESS, HE IMMEDIATELY FEELS SO UNWORTHY OF EVEN BEING IN GODS PRESENCE. THERE IS A HOLY CONVICTION THAT COMES OVER A PERSON.
- WHAT WAS ISAIAHS REACTION TO SEEING GOD ON HIS THRONE? WHY
- IN THE PRESENCE OF SUPREME HOLINESS MAN BECOMES AWARE OF HIS OWN SINS AND THE HOPELESS NATURE OF HIS SINFUL CHARACTER WITHOUT A HOLY GOD TO SHOW MERCY AND FORGIVENESS.
- WHAT WAS ISAIAHS REACTION TO SEEING GOD ON HIS THRONE? WHY
- OF WHAT SIGNIFICANCE IS THE LIVE COAL FROM OFF THE ALTAR?
- THE LIVE COAL SIGNIFIES THE CONVICTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT THAT CONVICTS MAN OF SIN.
- AN ANIMAL SACRIFICE WAS MADE ON THE ALTAR AND THE RESULT WAS THE COVERING OF SINBY THE BLODD OF THE ANIMAL. THE BURNING COAL IS THE RESULT OF THAT SACRIFICE IN THE FORM OF FORGIVENESS BEING APPLIED TO ISAIAHS LIFE.
- WHY DOES IT TOUCH ISAIAHS LIPS, AS OPPOSED TO HIS HEAD OR HIS HANDS? (READ MAT 12:34-35 AND PSA 51:10)
- ISAIAH IS CALLED TO SPEAK THE WORDS OF GOD AS A PROPHET. ALL SIN AND WRONG MOTIVE MUST BE CLEANSED FROM HIM FIRST BEFORE GOD CAN USE HIM EFFECTIVELY.
- THE LIVE COAL SIGNIFIES THE CONVICTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT THAT CONVICTS MAN OF SIN.
- WHEN MAN SEES GODS HOLINESS, HE IMMEDIATELY FEELS SO UNWORTHY OF EVEN BEING IN GODS PRESENCE. THERE IS A HOLY CONVICTION THAT COMES OVER A PERSON.
- #3 HE SAW THE NATIONAL NEED. (8)
- THE NATION NEEDED THE LORD, AND IT NEEDED THE TRUTH OF THE WORD OF GOD, BUT THERE WAS NO ONE TO TAKE THEM GODS WORD. GOD CALLS ISAIAH WHO AGREES TO GO.
- ONCE A BELIEVER EXPERIENCES TRUE FORGIVENESS FROM SIN, THERE IS A DESIRE TO SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS.
- THE NATION NEEDED THE LORD, AND IT NEEDED THE TRUTH OF THE WORD OF GOD, BUT THERE WAS NO ONE TO TAKE THEM GODS WORD. GOD CALLS ISAIAH WHO AGREES TO GO.
- #4 HE SAW THAT THE NATION WAS BLIND. (9-13)
- ISAIAHS MINISTRY WOULD MAKE SOME PEOPLE MORE BLIND SPIRITUALLY AND THEIR HEARTS MORE HARDENED THAN IF HE HAD NOT GONE.
- NOTICE THAT A PEOPLES RESPONSE TO YOUR MINISTRY DOES NOT NECESSARILY MAKE IT A SUCCESS. IF GOD CALLS, HE WILL MAKE IT A SUCCESS IN HIS EYES EVEN THOUGH IT MAY NOT APPEAR TO BE A SUCCESS IN THE EYES OF PEOPLE.
- DISCUSSION
- READ ROM 1:20-23
- THE MODEL OF AN IMPORTANT SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLE (9-10):
- EXPOSURE TO TRUTH MEANS A PERSON IS NOW ACCOUNTABLE TO THE LIGHT HE HAS RECEIVED.
- THE PERSON MUST DECIDE TO EITHER ACCEPT OR REJECT THE TRUTH.
- IF A PERSON ACCEPTS THE TRUTH HIS HEART IS CHANGED BY GOD.
- IF A PERSON REJECTS THE TRUTH HIS HEART IS SEARED.
- THE MORE LIGHT HE RECEIVES, THE MORE SEARED HIS HEART BECOMES UNTIL GOD FINALLY PERFORMS THE FINAL ACT OF HARDENING THAT HEART.
- PHARAOH IN THE BOOK OF EXODUS IS THE CLASSIC EXAMPLE.
- GOD GIVES THEM OVER TO THEIR OWN DESIRES.
- VERSES 9 AND 10 ARE SO IMPORTANT THEY ARE REFERRED TO DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY 6 TIMES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT. (MAT 13:13-15 MAR 4:12 LUK 8:10 JO 12:40 ACT 28:25-28 ROM 11:8).
- THE MODEL OF AN IMPORTANT SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLE (9-10):
: EXPLAIN VERSES 9 AND 10:
- IF NO ONE WOULD LISTEN AND RESPOND TO ISAIAHS MESSAGES, WHY WOULD GOD BOTHER TO SEND ANYONE?
- IN GODS LOVE AND MERCY, HE ALWAYS SENDS A WARNING BEFORE JUDGMENT THAT SOME MIGHT HEAR AND REPENT.
- “LORD, HOW LONG?” (11) WAS ISAIAHS QUESTION.
- IT IS UNCLEAR AS TO WHAT HIS QUESTION REFERS:
- HOW LONG UNTIL THE BLINDNESS OF THE JEWS IS LIFTED?
- HOW LONG DO THEY HAVE TO REPENT UNTIL JUDGMENT FALLS?
- HOW LONG WILL ISAIAH HAVE TO PREACH THE WORD TO THESE PEOPLE?
- THE ANSWER:
- FROM GODS ANSWER (11-13) IT SEEMS THAT THE QUESTION WAS ASKING HOW LONG UNTIL THE BLINDNESS OF THE JEWS WOULD BE LIFTED.
- THE PEOPLE WOULD FIRST HAVE TO SUFFER DESTRUCTION AND CAPTIVITY. (11-12)
- 1/10 OF THE PEOPLE (A REMNANT) WILL TURN TO THE LORD.
- WHAT DO WE LEARN ABOUT THIS REMNANT?
- THERE WILL BE ONLY ABOUT 1/10 OF ALL THE JEWS THAT WILL BE SAVED.
- THEY WOULD BE LIKE THE NEW GREEN SHOOTS OUT OF THE SUPPOSEDLY DEAD TREE THAT HAD FALLEN.
- THE DOUBLE FULFILLMENT (ISA 6:11-13):
- THE FIRST FULFILLMENT:
- DESTRUCTION OF THE NATION, THEN THE BABYLONIAN CAPTIVITY. THEN THE RETURN TO THE LAND OF ISRAEL AFTER 70 YEARS CAPTIVITY BEFORE THE 1ST COMING OF CHRIST.
- THE SECOND FULFILLMENT:
- BECAUSE THE JEWS DID NOT TURN TO THE LORD WHEN JESUS CAME IN THE FIRST COMING, THERE REMAINS A SECOND FULFILLMENT.
- DESTRUCTION OF ISRAEL IN 70 AD. AND THE DISPERSION OF JEWS IN THE WORLD. A REMNANT OF JEWS RETURN TO THE LAND IN 1948. THEN
- THE JEWS WILL TURN TO THE LORD AT THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST.
- READ ZEC 12:10
- THE FIRST FULFILLMENT:
- FROM GODS ANSWER (11-13) IT SEEMS THAT THE QUESTION WAS ASKING HOW LONG UNTIL THE BLINDNESS OF THE JEWS WOULD BE LIFTED.
- IT IS UNCLEAR AS TO WHAT HIS QUESTION REFERS:
- ISAIAHS MINISTRY WOULD MAKE SOME PEOPLE MORE BLIND SPIRITUALLY AND THEIR HEARTS MORE HARDENED THAN IF HE HAD NOT GONE.
- #1 HE SAW THE LORD. (1-4)
- KING UZZIAH DIED. THE NATIONAL GLORY OF ISRAEL DIED OUT WITH THIS KING AND WAS NEVER FULLY REGAINED TO THIS DAY.
