HEBREWS 10:1-6
LEV 3-4
LESSON #22
THE SIN OFFERING (THE SIN NATURE) AND
THE PEACE OFFERING (COMMUNION WITH GOD)
- MEMORY VERSE: ROMANS 5:1
- THE SIN OFFERING = THE SIN NATURE
- THIS IS THE SECOND NON-SWEET SAVOR OFFERING. REMEMBER THAT THIS GROUP OF NON-SWEET SAVOR OFFERINGS WAS COMPULSORY, AND THAT IT SHOWS THE WORK OF CHRIST ON THE CROSS.
- READ LEV 4:1-35 (LEV 6:25-30)
- SIGNIFICANCE:
- THIS OFFERING WAS A COVERING OF THE SIN NATURE OF MAN.
- WHAT IS THE SIN NATURE?
- READ 1CO 15:21-22
- WHEN ADAM AND EVE SINNED IN GEN 3, THE SIN NATURE CAME UPON ALL MANKIND. THEREFORE, SINCE THAT TIME ALL MEN HAVE A TENDENCY TO SIN. ALL HUMAN BEINGS AUTOMATICALLY HAVE THAT SIN NATURE. YOU CAN SEE IT IN THE SMALLEST CHILD. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TEACH CHILDREN TO LIE. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TEACH THEM TO BE SELFISH. IT IS THEIR NATURE.
- THEREFORE, THE SIN NATURE IS THE EGOCENTRIC PART OF MAN THE PRIDE THE SELF-WILL.
- WE ALL HAVE IT, AND WE ALL HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT DAILY.
- THIS OFFERING MEETS THE NEEDS OF MAN FOR A GUILT-FREE CONSCIENCE.
- IN THIS OFFERING WE SEE THE AWFULNESS OF THE SIN NATURE, WHILE IN THE TRESPASS OFFERING WE STUDIED IN OUR LAST LESSON WE SAW THE AWFULNESS OF OUR SINFUL ACTIONS.
- WHAT KINDS OF SIN DID THIS OFFERING COVER?
- SINS COMMITTED IN IGNORANCE AGAINST THE COMMANDEMENTS OF GOD
- THESE WERE SINS COMMITTED WHEN HE DID NOT KNOW THAT DOING THEM WAS A SIN. (PSA 19:12)
- READ 1TIM 1:13-15 PAUL’S EXAMPLE
- WHEN A PERSON LEARNED THAT SOMETHING WAS A SIN AND THEN FEELS GUILTY, THIS OFFERING RELIEVED THE CONSCIENCE.
- SINS COMMITTED BY THE PRIEST (LEV 4:3-12)
- SINS COMMITTED BY THE WHOLE CONGREGATION (LEV 4:13-21)
- SINS OF THE GOVERNMENTAL RULER (LEV 4:22-26)
- SINS OF THE COMMON PEOPLE (LEV 4:27-35)
- THE OBJECTS OFFERED:
- A YOUNG BULL WITHOUT BLEMISH
- THIS WAS THE MOST VALUABLE ANIMAL. IT WAS THE OFFERING FOR THE PRIEST, THE PERSON IN LEADERSHIP. HE MUST OFFER A MORE VALUABLE ANIMAL BECAUSE HE HAD THE GREATER RESPONSIBILITY. (JAM 3:1)
- IT WAS ALSO USED TO REPRESENT THE WHOLE CONGREGATION (LEV 4:13-14)
- A MALE GOAT
- THIS WAS THE OFFERING FOR THE GOVERNMENTAL RULER.
- RULERS ARE ORDAINED BY GOD AND RESPONSIBLE TO GOD. THE PROBLEM IS MOST POLITICIANS TRY TO PLEASE PEOPLE RATHER THAN GOD.
- A FEMALE GOAT
- THIS WAS THE OFFERING FOR THE COMMON PEOPLE.
- THE FEMALE GOAT WAS OF LESS VALUE THAN THE MALE GOAT. THEREFORE, THE RULER WHO OFFERS THE MALE GOAT HAS A GREATER RESPONSIBILITY THAN THE AVERAGE MAN DOES.
- A FEMALE LAMB WAS PERMISSIBLE FOR THE COMMON PEOPLE. (LEV 4:32-35)
- THE METHOD:
- THE OFFERING OF A YOUNG BULL:
- THE BLOOD WAS SPRINKLED 7 TIMES BEFORE THE VEIL IN FRONT OF THE HOLY OF HOLIES = THIS OPENED THE WAY TO GOD JUST AS JESUS OPENED THE WAY TO THE HOLY OF HOLIES ON THE CROSS.
- SOME OF THE BLOOD PUT ON THE HORNS OF THE ALTAR OF INCENSE = THIS RESTORED THE PRIVILEGE OF WORSHIP AND PRAYER.
- MAN CANNOT APPROACH GOD IN HIS SINFUL STATE UNTIL THE SIN PROBLEM HAS BEEN DEALT WITH.
- ALL THE REST OF THE BLOOD IS POURED AT THE FOOT OF THE ALTAR OF BURNT OFFERING = GUILT IS LEFT AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS WHERE JESUS BLOOD FELL ON THE DAY OF CRUCIFIXION.
- FAT IS BURNED ON THE ALTAR OF BURNT OFFERING (REMEMBER THAT FAT WAS CONSIDERED THE BEST PART OF THE ANIMAL.) = FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD IS RESTORED THROUGH THE SACRIFICE OF GODS VERY BEST, HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST.
- THE PARTS OF THE ANIMAL NOT BURNED WERE TAKEN OUTSIDE THE CAMP WITH THE ASHES OF THE PARTS THAT WERE BURNED. TOGETHER THESE ARE BURNED AGAIN = THE AWFUL NATURE OF SIN MUST BE SEPARATED FROM THE CAMP (THE CHURCH OR THE BELIEVERS).
- THE OFFERING OF A GOAT OR A LAMB
- THE BLOOD IS PUT ON THE HORNS OF THE ALTAR OF BURNT OFFERING = REFUGE AND MERCY ARE GRANTED BECAUSE OF THE APPLICATION OF THE BLOOD.
- THE REST OF THE BLOOD IS POURED OUT AT THE FOOT OF THE ALTAR OF BURNT OFFERING = WITHOUT THE SHEDDING OF BLOOD IS NO REMISSION OF SIN (HEB 9:22), JUST AS JESUS HAD TO SHED HIS BLOOD THAT WE MIGHT HAVE FORGIVENESS.
- THE RESULTS (LEV 4:35)
- SIN WILL BE FORGIVEN HIM. (EPH 1:7)
- SUMMARY:
- NOTICE THAT GOD SEPARATES ACTS OF SIN FROM THE SIN NATURE BY MAKING TWO DIFFERENT OFFERINGS FOR SIN. WHY?
- GOD WANTS US TO KNOW THAT WE ARE PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR ACTIONS.
- GOD WANTS MAN TO KNOW THAT ALL HUMANS HAVE A SIN NATURE WHICH CAUSES MAN TO BE CHAINED TO SIN. IN OTHER WORDS, THE NON-BELIEVER IS A SLAVE TO SIN. HE HAS NO CHOICE BUT TO SIN. THAT CHAIN IS BROKEN BY CHRIST ON THE CROSS. THEREFORE, THE BELIEVER NOW HAS A CHOICE. HE CAN CHOOSE TO SIN OR HE CAN CHOOSE NOT TO SIN.
- A DISCUSSION QUESTION:
- IF JESUS NOT ONLY DIED FOR OUR ACTS OF SIN AND FOR OUR SIN NATURE, WHY DO CHRISTIANS STILL HAVE TO STRUGGLE WITH THE SIN NATURE?
- THE SWEET SAVOR OFFERINGS–VOLUNTARY
- (THEY SHOW THE PERSON OF CHRIST)
- THIS IS THE SECOND GROUP OF OFFERINGS. THIS GROUP CONSISTS OF A SET OF THREE OFFERINGS.
- THE PEACE OFFERING = COMMUNION AND FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD CHRIST OUR PEACE
- READ LEV 3:1-17 (7:11-21)
- THE SIGNIFICANCE:
- READ EPH 2:13-22
- BECAUSE OF WHAT CHRIST DID ON THE CROSS FOR US, AND BECAUSE OUR SIN IS FORGIVEN, WE NOW HAVE FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD.
- THE OBJECTS OFFERED:
- A SACRIFICE FROM THE HERD (LEV 3:1-5)
- EITHER A MALE OR FEMALE WITHOUT BLEMISH
- THE PERSON COULD BRING AN ANIMAL OF ANY VALUE DEPENDING ON THE VALUE HE PLACED ON HIS FORGIVENESS.
- THIS REPRESENTS WHAT THE BELIEVER SEES IN CHRIST AND HOW MUCH HE VALUES HIS FORGIVENESS. LUK 7:47
- THE BULL, HEIFER, OR OX REPRESENTS THE SERVANTHOOD OF CHRIST AS SEEN IN THE BOOK OF MARK.
- A SACRIFICE FROM THE FLOCK (LEV 3:6-11)
- EITHER A MALE OR FEMALE WITHOUT BLEMISH
- IF IT WAS A LAMB, IT REPRESENTS CHRIST’S IDENTIFICATION WITH MAN IN LIFE AND DEATH. (ISA 53 REV 5:6)
- REMEMBER THAT JOHN THE BAPTIST SAID THAT JESUS WAS THE LAMB OF GOD THAT TAKES AWAY THE SIN OF THE WORLD. (JOH 1:20)
- THE LAMB IS THE MOST COMPLETE REPRESENTATION OF CHRIST OF ALL THE SACRIFICES. THAT IS WHY WE DO NOT SAY THAT JESUS IS THE GOAT OF GOD OR THE BULL OF GOD. YES, THEY ALL REPRESENT SOME ASPECT OF CHRIST, BUT THE LAMB IS THE PICTURE OF INNOCENCE COMMITTED TO OBEYING HIS MASTER.
- LEV 3:9 “THE FAT TAIL”
- THIS WAS A SPECIAL BREED OF LAMB THAT HAD A VERY FAT TAIL THAT WEIGHED AS MUCH AS 15 LBS.
- IF THE SACRIFICE WAS A GOAT (LEV 3:12-17), IT REPRESENTS CHRIST’S ADEQUACY TO TAKE AWAY THE SIN OF MAN.
- REMEMBER THE SCAPEGOAT ON THE DAY OF ATONEMENT.
- THE METHOD OF OFFERING:
- THE BLOOD WAS SPRINKLED ON AND AROUND THE ALTAR OF BURNT OFFERING.
- THE FAT AND INWARD PARTS OF THE ANIMAL WERE BURNED ON WOOD ON THE ALTAR OF BURNT OFFERING.
- NOTICE IT SAYS THAT “ALL THE FAT IS THE LORD’S”. (LEV 3:16)
- THESE WERE CONSIDERED TO BE THE CHOICE PARTS. (ISA 55:2) THEY REPRESENT THE HIDDEN RICHES AND PRICELESS TREASURES OF CHRIST.
- IT PICTURES THE TOTAL DEDICATION OF CHRIST WHO SUFFERED AND DIED ON A WOOD CROSS.
- IT IS A SWEET SAVOUR UNTO THE LORD (LEV 3:5)
- IN THIS WE SEE THE LIFE OF CHRIST THAT WAS PLEASING TO GOD. ISA 53:10
- THE PEACE OFFERING AND THE BURNT OFFERING (OF WHICH WE HAVE YET TO STUDY) WERE MADE TOGETHER BECAUSE THEY GIVE A FULL VIEW OF THE INWARD VALUE AND GLORY OF CHRIST.
- THE PRIEST GOT THE BREAST AND SHOULDER (THIGH) TO EAT = BECAUSE WE HAVE PEACE WITH GOD, WE CAN FELLOWSHIP TOGETHER AND EAT TOGETHER IN COMMUNION. JOH 6:33,51,55,57
- BREAST = THE LOVE OF CHRIST FOR US (ROM 5:5-8)
- SHOULDER = THE POWER AND STRENGTH OF CHRIST GIVEN TO US
- THE PERSON OFFERING THE ANIMAL EATS THE REST OF IT IN THE TABERNACLE = WE HAVE COMMUNION WITH CHRIST BECAUSE WE ARE FORGIVEN AND BELONG TO HIS FELLOWSHIP OF BELIEVERS. (PSA 23:5)
- READ LEV 7:28-34
- THE WAVE OFFERING AND THE HEAVE OFFERING
- THESE ARE NOT A SEPARATE CATEGORY OF OFFERINGS BUT A MANNER IN WHICH AN OFFERING IN THE CATEGORY OF SWEET SAVOR OFFERINGS WERE DONE.
- THE WAVE OFFERING BEFORE THE LORD = THE OFFERING WAS WAVED BEFORE THE LORD AS AN EXPRESSION OF JOY IN WHAT GOD HAS DONE.
- THE HEAVE OFFERING = THE OFFERING WAS LIFTED UP AND GIVEN WILLINGLY AS AN EXPRESSION OF SINCERITY.
- APPLICATION:
- THE OLD TESTAMENT PEOPLE WERE TO GIVE GOD THE BEST ANIMALS (WITHOUT BLEMISH). THEY WERE TO GIVE GOD THE BEST PART OF THE ANIMALS (THE FAT AND INWARD PARTS). WE ARE TO DO THE SAME. WE ARE TO GIVE GOD THE BEST OF OUR LIVES, AND THE BEST OF OURSELVES, COMPLETE DEDICATION. (ROM 12:1-2)
- JESUS WAS THE PRIME EXAMPLE WHO GAVE THE BEST OF HIMSELF TO BE OBEDIENT TO HIS HEAVENLY FATHER. OUR CHALLENGE IS TO BE LIKE HIM.
