COURSE IN BIBLICAL DOCTRINE
Lesson #01
by Joyce Schmedel
- Introduction:
- In todays world there is a wealth of false doctrines from which man must choose what to believe regarding his spiritual life and eternal destiny.
- As we get closer to the second coming of Christ, more and more people will come under the influence of false doctrines.
- Read 2The 2:3
- This course is not any one denominational doctrine. This course is based on the Apostolic Doctrine that we find in the New Testament. In other words, what is it that the apostles in the early church believed?
- Read Acts 2:42
- The Apostolic Doctrine is what the New Testament apostles believed.
- The Apostolic Doctrine is the foundation of the New Testament and the early church.
- The Apostolic Doctrine is the body of knowledge that came from the established books of the Old Testament, the teachings of Jesus Christ, the teachings that the disciples passed on to the early church, and the revelation of truth given to the apostles (specifically Paul) by the Holy Spirit.
- Read Acts 2:42
- This course crosses denominational lines and the doctrines of men.
- Because we are already in the last days, it is very important that todays believer understand very well some important points of doctrine.
- The mature believer in Jesus Christ must be comfortable in what he believes in order to recognize and confront false doctrines with the assurance that he speaks Gods unchanging Biblical truth.
- Read Eph 4:14
- Read Rom 16:17
- Read Titus 1:9
- Read 2Joh 1:9-10
- In todays world there is a wealth of false doctrines from which man must choose what to believe regarding his spiritual life and eternal destiny.
- The Doctrine of the Holy Trinity:
- The word “trinity” does not occur in the Bible. However, the reality of the Holy Trinity is present in the Old Testament and in the New Testament.
- What is the doctrine of the Holy Trinity?
- The doctrine includes the definition of a supreme being and His activities that seeks a personal relationship with mortal man.
- God exists as one God in the form of three distinct personalities, so that the divine essence exists totally in each of the three but operates in unity of action and will.
- God, the Father
- Jesus Christ, the Son
- God, the Holy Spirit
- The proof of the Holy Trinity in Scripture:
- The Creator:
- God, the Father, thought out the creation and expressed the creation through the Word which is Jesus, the Son; and caused the Holy Spirit to be the life giving principle.
- Read Gen 1:1
- The Hebrew name for God is “Elohim” which is a generic term for God used by many religions to refer to any god.
- This word is a plural word because God exists in three personalities.
- It is God in three personalities that we call the Holy Trinity.
- What is unique about the name Elohim is that usually plural names require a plural verb. In the case of the plural name, Elohim, this plural word, uses a singular verb but only when it relates to the creator God of the Bible.
- The Hebrew name for God is “Elohim” which is a generic term for God used by many religions to refer to any god.
- The Holy Trinity in Creation:
- In Gen 1:2, there is a reference to the Holy Spirit that moved over the face of the earth.
- In Gen 1:3-25 there are references to God, the Father, speaking creation into existence. (“And God said ” vs. 3)
- Read Joh 1:1-4, 14
- In this passage we see that Jesus Christ is “the Word of God”.
- This is the eternal name of Jesus Christ.
- Read Rev 19:13
- Read Col 1:12-17
- All things were created by Him and for Him.
- All creation is held together by Jesus Christ. Science calls this force “gravity” but in reality it is Jesus Christ.

- Read Mat 28:19
- Read Act 2:32-33
- Read 2Cor 13:14
- Read Gal 4:6
- Read Luk 3:22
- Read 2Pet 1:17
- Read 1Joh 5:7
- There are a few verses that put the three members of the Holy Trinity into one or two verses:
- The eternal existence of the Holy Trinity:
- It is important to know that the Holy Trinity exists outside of time and space.
- Why is it important to know this? Some false doctrines come from a misunderstanding of these points.
- Read Psa 90:2
- The three members of the Holy Trinity were not created beings. They always existed even before the creation of Gen 1:1. (outside of time)
- The three members of the Holy Trinity were not created beings to exist inside of creation. They are not subject to the corruption that entered this world with the sin of Adam and Eve. (outside of space).
- Therefore, the Holy Trinity is not subject to the limits of time or the limits of space.
- The equality of the three members of the Holy Trinity:
- The three members of the Holy Trinity are persons with separate personalities and separate roles that each one performs.
- The three members of the Holy Trinity co-exist equally as one God.
- One member of the Trinity is not more important than the other.
- Read Joh 10:30
- Read Joh 17:21-23
- Read Isa 9:6-7
- The prophecy refers to Jesus Christ and His coming reign in the millennium.
- Notice these verses mix the Holy Trinity together equally as one God.
- The child is Jesus Christ. The millennial government shall be upon His shoulders.
- The name “counselor” is the name of the Holy Spirit.
- The name “everlasting father” is the name of God, the Father.

- What form does God, the Father have?
- Read Joh 4:24
- Read Joh 1:18
- God has the form of a spiritual being without a physical body. That means He is a Personal Spirit, rational, self-conscious, and a self-determining moral agent.
- God reveals who He is by means of His eternal characteristics and actions.
- The attributes of His character are eternal and totally pervasive of His being.
- Gods nature and the attributes of His character:
- God is self-existent, eternal, and transcendent (outside of time and space).
- Read Psa 147:5

- God is all knowing (omniscient).
- Read Psa 139:1-6
- Read Isa 40:28
- Read Rom 11:33
- Without the doctrine that God has all knowledge outside of time, there would be no Biblical prophecy of future events that receive their fulfillment 100% in time.
- Because God knows the reality of events in the future, He can predict those events with certainty before they happen.
- Gods nature consists of supreme holiness or perfection.
- Read Isa 5:16
- Read Psa 60:6
- Read Mat 5:48
- Because God is a Holy God, the impossibility of mans approach to God must be on Gods terms.
- The supreme holiness of God means that man can never do enough good works to meet that standard.
- Jesus restricts the fatherhood of God to believers in Jesus Christ.
- Gods character is supreme love.
