From the Hebrew Root word for “gourd” meaning “nauseous” to the point of vomiting. | Since the gourd is likened to the souls of the people in Nineveh who were sinful human beings, we can make the parallel that mans sinful soul is nauseous to God. |
7 | Worm
Psa 22:6 Job 25:6 |
This worm is a maggot of red color which was used to dye cloth (the red curtains in the tabernacle). The maggot is found where death is. Satan feeds on mens souls doomed to eternal death. From death through the red blood of Jesus Christ came eternal life. |
8 | East wind
Gen 41:6 Exo 10:13 Eze 17:10 Eze 19:12 |
East wind is always used with divine anger and judgment. |

#9 Comprehensive Book Analysis
Chapter Analysis: Jonah 4
Title: Gods Object Lesson
Theme: Gods loving mercy and patience demonstrated to Jonah
Conclusions: (Answer the riddle. What is the deep significance of the gourd, the worm, the sun, and the east wind?)
The riddle is a prefigure of salvation in Jesus Christ. Mans soul (the gourd) wasprepared by God, but sin made mans soul nauseous to God as Satan dried up the Wordof God (Mat 13:6). In Gods anger at Satan and sin (the East Wind), He sent JesusChrist (the worm) to be sin for us on the cross. (2Cor 5:21 Sal 22:6) Through His shedblood (the red dye from the worm) He cleansed us from sin to bring us salvation just as Hebrought salvation to Nineveh.
Application:
I need to be more aware of Gods little subtle teaching methods around me more open and observant.
