COURSE IN BIBLICAL DOCTRINE
Lesson #02
- Jesus Christ, the Son of God
- The Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, the second member of the Holy Trinity:
- Read Luk 3:22
- Read Joh 1:1, 14
- Jesus Christ is not just another man or just a prophet.
- He is fully God.
- The Lord Jesus Christ came to this earth in the preordained plan of God to bear mans sins on the cross.
- Read Rev 13:8
- Read 1Pet 1:20
- Read Isa 53:10
- His first coming to earth was the fulfillment of many years of prophesies through the Old Testament prophets.
- His coming and His sacrifice were planned by God, the Father, before Adam and Eve ever sinned.
- The Lord Jesus Christ was the fulfillment of all the Old Testament prophecies regarding a coming Jewish Messiah.
- Read Luk 18:31-34
- Read Luk 24:25-27, 44-48
- If it had not been for the Old Testament prophecies and the prophets, man would not know that Jesus Christ was the true Messiah.
- Because he fulfilled all the prophecies about His first coming, He will fulfill all the remaining prophecies about his second coming.
- The Lord Jesus Christ periodically appeared in the Old Testament in the form of “The Angel of the LORD (Jehovah)”.
- Read Gen 16:7-11
- Read Gen 22:11, 15
- Read Exo 3:2
- Read Exo 14:19
- Read Dan 3:25
- How do we know this was not just another angel? Angels never accept mans worship. After the fall of the angel Lucifer, they know better than to accept worship that belongs to God.
- These appearances in the Old Testament of the second member of the Holy Trinity are called “theophanies” which means = God appearances.
- The Lord Jesus Christ was born of a virgin conceived by the Holy Spirit.
- Read Isa 7:14
- Read Mat 1:18-25
- The doctrine of the virgin birth is an essential ingredient in the Christian faith. Why?
- Without the virgin birth, Jesus was born like every other man conceived with a sinful nature.
- The sinful nature was passed on to all humans after the sin of Adam and Eve.
- Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit of God without a sinful nature.
- The Lord Jesus Christ is, therefore, completely God and completely man.
- Read Phi 2:5-11
- Read Heb 4:15
- Being fully God, He set aside certain divine characteristics to become a man. For example, He set aside His omnipresence to limit himself to a physical body in time and space. He did not set aside his divine nature for the years he walked on this earth. He was still fully God at that time.
- Being fully man, he identified himself with man submitting himself in humility to the weaknesses of the flesh but without sin.
- He was not born with a sinful nature.
- He did not give in to the temptation to commit personal sins.
- The Lord Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and man.
- Read 1Tim 2:5
- Read Joh 14:6
- Because Jesus Christ is the only way to God, there is salvation in no other.
- Without a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, a person cannot know God.
- Without a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, a person cannot enter Gods eternal kingdom.
- The Lord Jesus Christ lived a sinless life.
- Read Heb 9:28
- Read Heb 7:26
- If Jesus had not lived a sinless life, He would not have been an acceptable sacrifice for the sins of His people. He would have had to die for his own sins.
- If Jesus had not lived a sinless life, He would not have become our perfect example for which we must follow.
- The Lord Jesus Christ died a vicarious, atoning death, shedding His blood on the cross for the sins of man.
- Read Heb 10:12
- Read Isa 53:5
- All the Old Testament sacrifices point to Jesus Christ, the final sacrifice for mans sin.
- His death on the cross paid the price to atone for our sins. He was innocent and died in place of the sinner.
- The Lord Jesus Christ rose from the dead in his body.
- Read 1Cor 15:3-5
- Read 1Cor 15:17, 20-21, 23
- This is not a “spiritual” resurrection as some seem to think but a bodily resurrection.
- The resurrection is important to the Christians faith because without His resurrection, we have no hope of our resurrection.
- His resurrection is our assurance that His sacrifice was sufficient to pay for our sins.
- The Lord Jesus Christ is now at the right hand of God, the Father.
- Read 1Joh 2:1
- Read Mar 16:19
- Read Rom 8:34
- In this period of the church age of grace, Jesus Christ is our advocate in heaven interceding for us.
- The right hand is the place of honor and power.
- The Lord Jesus Christ will come again to earth.
- Read Act 1:11
- Read Rev 19:11-16
- Read Rev 20:6
- Every believer waits for that blessed appearing of Jesus Christ.
- When He comes he will reign on earth for 1000 years, and believers will reign with Him.
- In the same way as we saw with God, the Father, there are a number of different names for Jesus Christ, the Son of God both in the Old Testament and the New Testament.
