- The forty days required for embalming Jacob’s body and the seventy days of mourning (50:3) may have overlapped. However, these time periods are in agreement with the traditional customs in Egypt.
- The threshing floor of Atad (50:10) is an unknown location where they evidently had a memorial ceremony. The Egyptians named it Abel-Mizraim which means = mourning of Egypt.
- The Cave of Macphelah
- This was a place where Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and Leah were buried.
- It was a cave that Abraham bought when Sarah died as a place to bury her.
- Read Gen 50:14-26 The end of Joseph’s life
- The reactions of Joseph’s brothers:
- When Jacob (Israel) died, Joseph’s brothers became afraid that now Joseph would retaliate against them for their betrayal when he was a teenager.
- The completion of Joseph’s forgiveness
- Joseph was sad that his brothers had not fully accepted and believed in his forgiveness.
- Joseph reassures them of the providence and sovereignty of God in their lives. Gen 50:20 is the equivalent of Rom 8:28.

- Joseph adopted Manasseh’s grandsons just as Jacob adopted his 2 sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. (50:23)
- Remember that the reason for this was to insure that subsequent generations would be tied to the Promised Land by inheritance.
- The burial of Joseph
- Joseph was temporarily buried in Egypt with the expectation that his bones would eventually be returned to the Promised Land just as Jacob was.
