- The Definition of the Gift of Teaching:
- The person with this gift has the ability to impart knowledge and to lead others into revealed truth or clarifying truth and doctrine. The motivation in teaching is to search out and validate truth, and then to share it with others. This person gains more joy in searching and studying truth than in presenting it to others.
- The Characteristics of the Gift of Teaching:
- This person is well organized. He Is systematic and punctual in all areas of his life.
- Validation of truth:
- This person likes to read, study, and do research. He is fact oriented.
- He feels concerned that truth be established in every situation. He checks sources and people for accuracy.
- He believes that truth produces change. He has strong convictions based on truth.
- For the Christian teacher, the Bible is the supreme authority.
- Language:
- The person with this gift likes languages, words, word studies, and grammar.
- Usually he has a large vocabulary.
- Objectivity:
- This person is more objective than subjective. He looks at life with more detachment.
- He does not let his emotions interfere with decisions.
- Intellectual:
- The person with this gift is self-disciplined, self-controlled, and self-motivated.
- Friendships:
- The person with this gift has a select circle of friends. He tends to remain at a distance.
- He is seldom drawn into superficial friendships.
- He is uneasy in unstructured situations.
- He usually hates superficial conversation or chit chat.
- People are often intimidated by the presence of the person with this gift.
- The Benefits of the Gift of Teaching:
- A person with this gift helps to keep people in the Word of God.
- A group or a church is benefitted by a person with this gift, for this person helps to keep a group solidly based on sound doctrine.
- This person is the continuation of where prophets and apostles end. Therefore, the ministry of a teacher is to build on the ministry of others.
- This person meets the mental or intellectual needs in the body of Christ.
- The Manifestations of the Gift of Teaching:
- This person brings people to the knowledge of the Word of God.
- This person facilitates spiritual growth.
- This person helps people apply principles from the Word of God to their every day lives.
- The Childhood Expressions of the Gift of Teaching:
- The tendency of a child with this gift is to be more quiet and alone than other children.
- This child likes other children and is liked by them.
- This child is not necessarily intellectually brilliant but has a thirst for knowledge and a wide taste in reading.
- This child responds to school assignments by over preparation.
- If the child is not interested in a subject, he will ignore it and suffer a low grade.
- This child is bored by small talk and motivated by challenge.
- This child has a fascination with letters and numbers.
- This child is personally organized and has emotional stability. He is not given to emotional highs and lows.
- Other people often view this person as cold, aloof, conceited, and not interested. He may give other people the impression that he is rigid, dogmatic, or unemotional in this thinking.
- This child will be faithful, loyal, and punctual and has an independent or individualistic nature.
- This child generally does not go out for sports in school.
- This child is not usually drawn to pets as he considers them too time-consuming.

- Problem Areas and Cautions that lead to improving this gifta challenge:
- Sometimes a person with the gift of teaching neglects the practical application of truth.
- When teaching, he often does not give much in the way of practical suggestions for putting the truth of his teaching into practice.
- He is slow to accept the views of others because he thinks he is always right. As a result, he should avoid a “know-it-all” attitude.
- He should be aware of others opinions, and that they are important.
- Therefore, he should not resist open discussion.
- He should avoid developing a sense of pride in his own intellectual ability.
- This person is easily sidetracked because he has many interests. Focusing his time and efforts is not always easy for him.
- He is not oriented by feelings.
- Therefore, he should develop an awareness of the feelings of others.
- He tends to believe that his gift is foundational to other gifts.
- Therefore, he should develop tolerance for the gifts of other people.
- Homework:
- Read each statement under “Characteristics”:
- Ask yourself, “How true is this of me?”
- If the characteristic is never true about you, place an X in the box under “Never”. Then place a 0 in the point column.
- If the characteristic is true about you only on rare occasions, place an X in the box under “Seldom”. Then place a 1 in the point column.
- If the characteristic is true about you sometimes and sometimes not (up to 49% of the time), place an X in the box under “Sometimes”. Then place a 2 in the point column.
- If the characteristic is true about you 50 75% of the time, place and X under “Usually”. Then place a 3 in the point column.
- If the characteristic is true about you most of the time, place an X under “Mostly”. Then place a 4 in the point column.
- If the characteristic is true about you all the time, place an X under “Always”. Then place a 5 in the point column.
- After completing the columns concerning “Characteristics”, add all the points and place the total in the box at the bottom of the point column, next to the word “Total”.
