LEVITICUS 1-2
LESSON #23
THE MEAL OFFERING (THE LOVELINESS OF CHRIST) AND
THE BURNT OFFERING (CHRIST OUR SUBSTITUTE)
- MEMORY VERSE: EPHESIANS 5:2
- SWEET SAVOR OFFERINGSVOLUNTARY (THEY SHOW THE PERSON OF CHRIST)
- THE MEAL OFFERING = THE LOVELINESS OF CHRIST
- READ LEV 2:1-16
- THE INGREDIENTS:
- FINE FLOUR = THE WELL-INTEGRATED PERSONALITY OF CHRIST BEING WITHOUT SIN. THERE WAS A PERFECT BALANCE OF MAN’S 3 BASIC DRIVES WITHIN THE PERSON OF CHRIST (SPIRITUAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, AND PHYSICAL). GOD INTENDED MAN’S 3 DRIVES TO BE IN BALANCE WITH THE STRONGEST DRIVE TO BE THE SPIRITUAL, THE SECOND STRONGEST DRIVE TO BE THE PSYCHOLOGICAL, AND THE WEAKEST TO BE THE PHYSICAL.
- OLIVE OIL = HOLY SPIRIT = JESUS’ MINISTRY WAS ACCOMPLISHED BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
- FRANKINCENSE = A FRAGRANCE RELEASED UNDER PRESSURE= JESUS’ LIFE MANIFESTED FRAGRANCE UNDER THE PRESSURE OF PERSECUTION.
- SALT = A PRESERVING AGENT TO SEAL A COVENANT = CHRIST, THE TOKEN OF FAITHFULNESS BETWEEN GOD AND MAN PRESERVING THE NEW COVENANT. CHRISTIANS ARE TO BE THE SALT OF THE WORLD (PRESERVING THE WORLD FROM SIN) BY PRESENTING OUR BODIES A LIVING SACRIFICE TO THE LORD. (ROM 12:1-2)
- NO LEAVEN = LEAVEN IS A SYMBOL OF SIN OR EVIL = IN CHRIST THERE WAS NO SIN OR EVIL FOUND IN HIM.
- NO HONEY (FRUIT SYRUP) = SIN OR EVIL BECAUSE IT FERMENTED AND BECAME SOUR.
- METHOD OF OFFERING:
- THE INGREDIENTS COULD BE MIXED AND UNBAKED OR THEY COULD BE MIXED AND BAKED.
- OIL IS SPOKEN OF IN SEVERAL WAYS TO SHOW THE MINISTRY OF CHRIST:
- “MINGLED WITH OIL” = CHRIST BORN OF THE SPIRIT (LUK 1:35)
- “OIL UPON IT” = CHRIST BAPTIZED OF THE SPIRIT (MAT 3:16-17)
- “POUR OIL THEREON” = LED OF THE SPIRIT (MAR 1:12)
- “WITH OIL” = ANOINTED, HIS MINISTRY WAS IN THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT (JOH 3:34 MAT 12:28)
- THE PRIESTS WERE TO TAKE OUT A PERCENTAGE OF EACH ITEM FOR THEIR OWN USE BEFORE THE MIXING WAS DONE.
- FOR EACH INGREDIENT WE, AS NEW TESTAMENT PRIESTS, ARE TO PARTAKE OF CHRIST SO AS TO BECOME MORE LIKE HIM.
- THE OFFERING WAS BAKED WITH FIRE = GOD’S PURIFYING ENERGY BROUGHT OUT THE SWEETNESS IN THE LIFE OF CHRIST THROUGH THE FIRE OF PERSECUTION.
- SIGNIFICANCE:
- THE OFFERING WAS MADE EVERY MORNING AND EVERY EVENING. THE PERSON PERFORMED THE OFFERING AS AN EXPRESSION OF THANKFULNESS TO GOD OR IN SEEKING THE DIVINE FAVOR OF GOD.
- APPLICATION:
- CHRIST IS TO BE OUR EXAMPLE OF A LIFE PLEASING TO GOD.
- THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR SPIRITUAL NATURE SHOULD BE A PRIORITY IN OUR LIVES.
- OUR LIVES SHOULD BE LIVED IN THE POWER AND DIRECTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
- OUR LIVES SHOULD BE LIVED ATTEMPTING TO AVOID SIN IN EVERY WAY.
- OUR LIVES SHOULD PRESERVE HOLINESS IN THE WORLD (SALT)
- THE BURNT OFFERING = CHRIST OUR SUBSTITUTE EPH 5:2
- READ LEV 1:1-17
- THE OBJECTS OFFERED:
- BULL, RAM, TURTLE DOVE, OR A YOUNG PIGEON
- IT HAD TO BE A DOMESTICATED ANIMAL.
- JEWS LIVED WITH DOMESTICATED ANIMALS INSIDE THE HOUSE. THEREFORE, THE DOMESTICATED ANIMAL WAS DEAR TO THE OWNER = CHRIST WAS THE OBEDIENT SERVANT, DEAR TO THE HEART OF GOD.
- IT HAD TO BE WITHOUT BLEMISH = THE PERFECTION AND SINLESSNESS OF CHRIST.
- THE METHOD:
- THE SINNER OFFERING THE ANIMAL KILLS THE OFFERING HIMSELF = CHRIST, THE INNOCENT WHO DIED BECAUSE OF OUR GUILTY SINS.
- PEOPLE MUST TAKE HOLD OF CHRIST AND CLAIM HIM AS THEIR SACRIFICE JUST AS THE OLD TESTAMENT SINNER HAD TO TAKE HOLD OF THE ANIMAL. CHRIST DIED FOR EVERYONE’S SIN BUT ONLY THOSE WHO CLAIM HIM AS THEIR SACRIFICE ARE FORGIVEN.
- THE PRIEST SPRINKLES THE BLOOD AROUND THE BRONZE ALTAR
- BLOOD = LIFE
- SPRINKLING = PRESENTATION TO GOD ON THE CROSS
- THE ANIMAL IS CUT INTO PIECES = CHRIST’S SUFFERINGS BEFORE HE WENT TO THE CROSS AND WHILE HE WAS ON THE CROSS.
- THE PIECES ARE BURNED ON THE BRONZE ALTAR = FIRE IS THE PURIFYING ENERGY OF GOD AS HE JUDGES SIN ON THE CROSS
- THE WHOLE ANIMAL IS CONSUMED BY FIRE = CHRIST’S TOTAL COMMITMENT TO GOD
- SIGNIFICANCE:
- THE MORNING AND EVENING OFFERINGS WERE CALLED A CONTINUAL BURNT OFFERING = CHRIST IN CONSECRATION EVER LIVES TO MAKE INTERCESSION FOR US.
- THE SACRIFICE OF CHRIST ON THE CROSS IS RELEVANT FOREVER TO PAY FOR OUR SINS IN THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE.
- THE ONE PART OF THE ANIMAL, IF IT WAS A RAM OR BULL, THAT WAS NOT OFFERED WAS THE SKIN. IT WAS USED BY THE PRIEST FOR CLOTHING = WE ARE CLOTHED WITH THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF CHRIST.
- THE SIGNIFICANCE TO THE PERSON MAKING THE OFFERING WAS ONE OF SELF-DEDICATION = CHRIST WAS TOTALLY DEDICATED TO THE TASK HE CAME TO PERFORM.
- WE NEED TO BE TOTALLY DEDICATED TO HIM.
- A COMPARISON OF THE BURNT OFFERING AND THE SIN OFFERING:
- THESE TWO OFFERINGS SEEM VERY SIMILAR AND ARE OFTEN CONFUSED AND MISUNDERSTOOD.
- COMPARISON
BURNT OFFERING | SIN OFFERING |
IT TELLS US WHO CHRIST IS | IT TELLS US WHAT CHRIST DID |
CHRIST MEETS THE DEMANDS OF GOD’S STANDARD | CHRIST MEETS THE DEEP NEEDS OF MAN |
WE SEE THE PRECIOUSNESS OF CHRIST | WE SEE THE HATEFULNESS OF SIN |
VOLUNTARY | COMPULSORY |
THE OFFERING ASCENDED UP TO GOD | THE OFFERING WAS POURED OUT (DOWN) |
- THE ORDER OF THE PRESENTATION TO GOD BY THE PRIEST IS SIGNIFICANT:
- THE SIN OFFERING AND TRESPASS OFFERINGS WERE PRESENTED FIRST = WITH REPENTANCE AND SIN ATONED FOR, ONE IS READY FOR AN ENCOUNTER WITH CHRIST.
- THE BURNT OFFERING WAS PRESENTED TO GOD NEXT = FOLLOWING ATONEMENT FOR SIN, ONE HAS ACCESS TO GOD FOR SELF-DEDICATION.
- THE MEAL OFFERING AND THE PEACE OFFERING WERE PRESENTED LAST = THANKSGIVING FOR THE WORK OF CHRIST AND FELLOWSHIP WITH HIM BRINGS ONE INTO THE CONSCIOUSNESS OF BEING AT PEACE WITH GOD.
- SUMMARY:
- ISA 53 PRESENTS ALL OF THE OFFERINGS IN ONE SCRIPTURE PASSAGE.
- VS. 3 THE MEAL OFFERING (BRUISING OF THE FLOUR)
- VS. 5 THE PEACE OFFERING
- VS. 5 THE TRESPASS OFFERING
- VS. 6 THE SIN OFFERING
- VS. 10 THE SIN OFFERING
- VS. 10 THE MEAL OFFERING (BRUISING OF THE FLOUR)
- VS 11 THE BURNT OFFERING
- VS. 12 THE SIN OFFERING
- THE BOOK OF JOHN FOLLOWS THE SAME PATTERN AS THE OFFERINGS THAT ARE PRESENTED IN THE BOOK OF LEVITICUS BEGINNING WITH THE GOD-LIKE ASPECT OF CHRIST AND ENDING WITH THE PROVISION OF SIN. IN OTHER WORDS THE BOOK OF JOHN FOLLOWS THE BOOK OF LEVITIUS IF YOU READ BOTH CHRONOLOGICALLY.
- REMEMBER WE HAVE STUDIED THE OFFERINGS BACKWARD FROM LEV 5 TO LEV 1. THIS IS THE SEQUENCE OF HOW MAN COMES TO GOD. THIS IS ALSO THE SEQUENCE OF HOW MAN ENTERED THE TABERNACLE AND THE BLOOD OF THAT SACRIFICED ANIMAL MADE ITS WAY BACK TO THE HOLY OF HOLIES (GODS MANIFESTED PRESENCE) ON THE DAY OF ATONEMENT.
