ISAIAH 61 AND 62
Lesson #48
SERVANT SONG #5 ASPECTS OF THE MESSIAHS KINGDOM
- MEMORY VERSE: ISAIAH 62:3
- WE HAVE SEEN WHAT HAS BEEN CALLED “SERVANT SONGS” PREVIOUSLY IN THE BOOK OF ISAIAH. IN FACT, WE HAVE STUDIED FOUR OF THEM.
- ISAIAH REFERRED TO ISRAEL AS AN UNFAITHFUL SERVANT OF THE LORD. HE THEN CONTRASTED THE UNFAITHFUL SERVANT, ISRAEL, TO THE FAITHFUL SERVANT, THE MESSIAH. THEN, THROUGH THE SERVANT SONGS, ISAIAH DEVELOPED THE DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF THE MINISTRY OF THE FAITHFUL SERVANT, THE MESSIAH. REMEMBER ISAIAH 53 WAS ONE OF THOSE SERVANT SONGS. IN ISAIAH 61 WE SEE ANOTHER SERVANT SONG.
- IT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE BIBLE TALKS ABOUT A FIRST COMING AND A SECOND COMING OF JESUS CHRIST.
- WHEN WE BEGAN OUR STUDY OF ISAIAH, WE LEARNED A VERY IMPORTANT PRINCIPLE OF BIBLE PROPHECY: THAT OF DOUBLE FULFILLMENT.
- THIS ASPECT OF TWO FULFILLMENTS TO EVERY BIBLE PROPHECY, IS CLEARLY SEEN IN THIS CHAPTER. JESUS MADE THIS DISTINCTION BETWEEN A FIRST FULFILLMENT AND A SECOND FULFILLMENT IN REGARDS TO HIS OWN MINISTRY.
- READ ISA 61:1-3 SERVANT SONG #5
- THE BACKGROUND OF THIS PASSAGE:
- THIS PASSAGE RELATES TO THE OLD TESTAMENT “YEAR OF JUBILEE”.
- READ LEV 25:8-14
- EVERY FIFTY YEARS, ALL DEBTS WERE TO BE CANCELED, ALL SLAVES WERE TO BE FREED, ALL LAND WAS TO BE RETURN ED TO ITS ORIGINAL OWNER. THE JEWS NEVER REALLY PRACTICED THE YEAR OF JUBILEE. GOD INTENDED IT AS A SYMBOL OF LIVING IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD.
- NOTICE THAT THE TRINITY IS MENTIONED IN VERSE 1.
- WHO IS THE SERVANT MENTIONED HERE?
- THIS PASSAGE RELATES TO THE OLD TESTAMENT “YEAR OF JUBILEE”.
- THE BACKGROUND OF THIS PASSAGE:
- WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE SERVANTS MISSION?
- WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF THE SERVANTS MISSION?
- WHERE DID JESUS MAKE THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN HIS FIRST COMING AND HIS SECOND COMING?
- READ LUK 4:16-21
- WHERE DID JESUS STOP READING?
- AFTER THE PHRASE “TO PROCLAIM THE ACCEPTABLE YEAR OF THE LORD”.
- NOTICE THAT HE WAS NOT INTERRUPTED AT THIS POINT, BUT THAT HE PURPOSEFULLY STOPPED READING. IN FACT, IT TELLS US HE WAS FINISHED WHEN IT SAYS HE CLOSED THE BOOK AND SAT DOWN. THEN HE TOLD THEM THAT THE SCRIPTURE HE HAD JUST READ WAS FULFILLED THAT DAY. WHAT DID HE MEAN?
- HE MEANT THAT HE WAS THE MESSIAH.
- HE MEANT THAT HE HAD COME TO FULFILL THE PROPHECY HE HAD JUST READ AND FREE MEN FROM THEIR SINS. HE WAS TALKING ABOUT HIS FIRST COMING.
- WHY DID HE STOP READING AND NOT COMPLETE THE READING OF VERSE 2 AND 3 OF ISAIAH 61?
- AS WE HAVE SEEN MANY TIMES IN THE BOOK OF ISAIAH, THE FIRST COMING OF CHRIST AND THE SECOND COMING ARE OFTEN MIXED TOGETHER IN ONE VERSE. THAT IS THE CASE WITH ISA 61:2.
- JESUS READ ABOUT HIS FIRST COMING. HE DID NOT READ ABOUT HIS SECOND COMING.
- THE LITTLE COMMA BETWEEN THE WORDS “LORD” & “AND” REPRESENT APPROXIMATELY 2,000 YEARS OF TIME.
- WHY DID HE STOP READING AND NOT COMPLETE THE READING OF VERSE 2 AND 3 OF ISAIAH 61?
- HE MEANT THAT HE HAD COME TO FULFILL THE PROPHECY HE HAD JUST READ AND FREE MEN FROM THEIR SINS. HE WAS TALKING ABOUT HIS FIRST COMING.
- JESUS ACTIONS IN LUKE 4 SHOW US CLEARLY THAT HE MADE THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN HIS FIRST COMING AND HIS SECOND COMING. HE UNDERSTOOD VERY WELL THE PRINCIPLE OF DOUBLE FULFILLMENT OF BIBLE PROPHECY.
- WHAT MUST JESUS STILL FULFILL AT HIS SECOND COMING?
- THE DAY OF VENGEANCE
- THE DESTRUCTION OF ALL NON-BELIEVERS AT THE BATTLE OF ARMAGEDDON.
- READ 2THE 1:7-10 AND REV 19:11-21
- TO FULFILL HIS PROMISES OF COMFORT, PEACE, AND JOY TO ALL BELIEVERS IN HIS MILLENNIAL KINGDOM. (3)
- HE MEANT THAT HE WAS THE MESSIAH.
- READ ISA 61:4-9 JEWS AND GENTILES IN THE MILLENNIAL KINGDOM
- GENTILE BELIEVERS IN THE MILLENNIAL KINGDOM WILL BUILD UP THE CITIES (4), FEED THE ANIMALS (5) AND PLANT NEW CROPS (5).
- JEWISH BELIEVERS WILL BE GODS PRIESTS. (6)
- IT WAS GODS ORIGINAL INTENTION THAT THE WHOLE NATION OF ISRAEL BE PRIESTS AND MINISTER TO THE GENTILES.
- READ EXO 19:6
- THE JEWS WILL RECEIVE A DOUBLE PORTION OF FOOD.
- WHY?
- JEWISH BELIEVERS WILL BE GODS PRIESTS. (6)
- A DOUBLE PORTION WAS TO BE GIVEN TO THE FIRSTBORN. (DEU 21:17) THE JEWS ARE THE FIRSTBORN NATION CALLED BY GOD.
- GOD SAYS HE LOVES JUSTICE IN VERSE 8. HE HAS REMEMBERED ALL THE INJUSTICES AGAINST THE JEWS THROUGH HISTORY. ALL THESE INJUSTICES WAIT FOR A FINAL JUSTICE IN THE MILLENNIUM. GOD WILL PAY THEM DOUBLE FOR ALL THEIR INJUSTICES THROUGH HISTORY.
- IN THE MILLENNIUM, EVERYONE WILL KNOW WHICH PEOPLE ARE THE JEWS. THEY WILL STAND OUT, NOT WITH A YELLOW STAR OF DAVID ON THEIR COAT, MARKED FOR PERSECUTION, BUT THEY WILL STAND OUT, MARKED FOR BLESSING. (9)
- GENTILE BELIEVERS IN THE MILLENNIAL KINGDOM WILL BUILD UP THE CITIES (4), FEED THE ANIMALS (5) AND PLANT NEW CROPS (5).
- READ ISA 61:10 – ISA 62:5 THE MARRIAGE OF THE MESSIAH
- SOME INTERPRETERS SAYS ISAIAH IS SPEAKING FOR THE FAITHFUL REMNANT OF JEWS WHO REAP THE REWARDS OF THEIR FAITHFULNESS TO GOD.
- OTHER INTERPRETERS SAY THE MESSIAH, JESUS CHRIST, IS SPEAKING IN THESE VERSES.
- IN EITHER CASE, THERE WILL BE A GREAT WEDDING CELEBRATION.
- ISRAEL WILL REJOICE BECAUSE THEY ARE THE WIFE OF THE LORD, HAVING REPENTED OF THEIR SPIRITUAL PROSTITUTION WITH FOREIGN IDOLS.
- THE CHURCH WILL REJOICE BECAUSE THEY ARE THE BRIDE OF CHRIST.
- THE TWO-FOLD, NEW NAME FOR ISRAEL
- THE JEWS WILL HAVE A NEW COVENANT, A NEW HEART FOR GOD, A NEW RIGHTEOUSNESS, A NEW LAND, AND A NEW NAME IN THE MILLENNIUM.
- THE NEW NAMES: “HEPHZIBAH” AND “BEULAH”
- HEPHIZIBAH MEANS = MY DELIGHT IS IN HER OR DELIGHTFUL
- BEULAH MEANS = MARRIED
- ISRAEL AND THE JEWS HAVE BEEN “FORSAKEN” AND “DESOLATE” SINCE OLD TESTAMENT TIMES BECAUSE OF THEIR UNFAITHFULNESS TO GOD.
- WHEN THE 12 SPIES FIRST WENT INTO THE PROMISE LAND IN NUM 13, IT WAS A LAND FLOWING WITH MILK AND HONEY PRODUCING HUGE CLUSTERS OF GRAPES. BECAUSE OF SIN, THE LAND CHANGED AND BECAME DESOLATE, PRONE TO FAMINES AND DROUGHT. IN THE MILLENNIUM, AGAIN IT WILL BE A GARDEN, MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN BEFORE BECAUSE THEIR SIN IS FORGIVEN.
- READ ISA 62:6-12 THE MESSIAHS ANTICIPATION OF THE MILLENNIUM
- WHAT DO YOU LEARN ABOUT THE SERVANTS DETERMINATION TO SUCCEED?
- THE LORD MAKES IT CLEAR THAT EVERYTHING WILL BE A NEW BEGINNING IN THE MILLENNIUM.
- A HOLY PEOPLE
- A NEW COVENANT FOR THE JEWS
- A RESTORED LAND
- A REBUILT JERUSALEM.
- EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING IS ANXIOUSLY WAITING FOR THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST TO ESTABLISH HIS KINGDOM ON EARTH AND TO MAKE THE JEWS A HOLY PEOPLE (12).
- THE PROPHETS WHO FORETOLD ABOUT IT. (6)
- ALL BELIEVERS (6)
- ALL JEWS (8)
- THE MESSIAH, HIMSELF (10)
- ACCORDING TO ROM 8:22-23 EVERYTHING IN HEAVEN AND EARTH ANXIOUSLY WAITS FOR THE SECOND COMING OF JESUS CHRIST.
