ISAIAH 49
Lesson #39
THE FAITHFUL SERVANT

  • MEMORY VERSE: PSALM 50:1
  • ISAIAH 49 BEGINS A NEW SECTION IN THE BOOK OF ISAIAH..
    • CHAPTERS 40-48 COVERED “THE COMFORT OF JEHOVAH”.
    • CHAPTERS 49-57 COVER “THE SALVATION OF JEHOVAH THROUGH THE SUFFERING SERVANT”.
  • ISAIAH 49 IS ANOTHER “SERVANT SONG”. (SERVANT SONG #1 WAS IN ISA 42).
  • READ ISA 49:1-21 THE CHOOSING AND COMMISSIONING OF A SERVANT
    • THE SERVANT, ISRAEL’S RESPONSIBILITIES BEFORE GOD:
      • TO MAINTAIN THE TRUTH OF THE WORD OF GOD.
      • TO MAINTAIN THE GENEALOGIC BLOODLINE TO THE MESSIAH.
      • TO EXEMPLIFY THE BLESSINGS OF A FAITHFUL GOD.
      • TO BE A LIGHT TO THE GENTILES.
    • TO UNDERSTAND THIS CHAPTER, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO DECIDE WHO IS SPEAKING.
      • WHO DO YOU THINK IS DOING THE SPEAKING IN THIS PASSAGE? (1)
        • IT IS JESUS CHRIST THAT IS SPEAKING TO ISRAEL ABOUT HIS FATHER, GOD.
    • REMEMBER THAT THE JEWS WERE THE FIRST SERVANT CALLED BY GOD TO FULFILL GOD’S PLAN. THEY FAILED TO BE A TOTALLY FAITHFUL SERVANT TO GOD, SO GOD SENT HIS SON TO FULFILL THE ROLE OF A SERVANT. HERE IS WHERE THE PARALLEL BETWEEN ISRAEL, THE SERVANT, AND JESUS, THE SERVANT IS CLEARLY SEEN.
      • NOTICE THE DISCOURAGEMENT OF THE FIRST SERVANT, ISRAEL, IN VERSE 4. THAT WAS WHY GOD SENT HIS SON TO BE THE SECOND SERVANT (5-6).
        • IN THEIR OWN STRENGTH, THE JEWS COULD NOT POSSIBLY FULFILL GOD’S EXPECTATIONS. THEY NEEDED SUPERNATURAL HELP IN THE FORM OF A REDEEMER (7).
          • WE ALSO SEE A TIME OF DISCOURAGEMENT IN JESUS’ MINISTRY WHEN MANY DISCIPLES LEFT HIM.
            • SEE JOH 1:10-11 AND JOH 6:67.
    • WHY DOES GOD USE THE SYMBOL OF A SERVANT?
      • A SERVANT IS SOMEONE WHO IS WILLINGLY OBEDIENT TO THE WILL OF HIS MASTER.
        • OBVIOUSLY JESUS CHRIST IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF A SERVANT.
          • READ JOH 12:49-50 JOH 14:31
        • HOW DO WE KNOW FOR SURE THAT ISAIAH 49 REFERS TO JESUS CHRIST?
          • READ LUKE 2:27-32
            • SIMEON QUOTES ISA 49:6 WHEN HE FIRST SEES JESUS.
    • WHAT DOES THIS CHAPTER REVEAL TO YOU ABOUT JESUS CHRIST?
      • JESUS CHRIST WAS SENT BY GOD, THE FATHER. (1)
      • JESUS’ WORDS ARE POWERFUL. (2)
      • JESUS IS GOD’S TOOL. (2)
      • JESUS CHRIST WILL LIFT UP THE JEWS AND RESTORE THEM AS GOD’S PEOPLE. (6)
      • JESUS CHRIST WILL REACH THE GENTILES AS WELL AS THE JEWS. (6)
      • JESUS CHRIST WILL BE DESPISED BY MANY. (7)
      • A REFERENCE TO THE CRUCIFIXION:
        • ISA 49:16 “I HAVE ENGRAVED THEE UPON THE PALMS OF MY HANDS.”
          • READ ZEC 12:10
  • READ ISA 49:22-26 THE FUTURE ROLE OF GENTILE NATIONS
    • WHAT PERIOD OF TIME DOES THIS SECTION COVER?
      • DURING THE MILLENNIAL KINGDOM OF JESUS CHRIST ON EARTH WILL BE A TIME OF THE REGATHERING OF ISRAEL WHEN THE JEWS WILL BE RAISED TO BE A FAVORED NATION. IT WILL BE A TIME WHEN CHRIST WILL BE A PASTOR TO THE NATION OF ISRAEL.
    • WHO ARE THE “LOST” CHILDREN IN VERSE 20?
      • THE LOST CHILDREN ARE THE JEWS THAT WILL EVENTUALLY BE SAVED AND RESTORED.
    • WHO ARE THE “OTHER” CHILDREN IN VERSE 20?
      • THE OTHER CHILDREN ARE THE GENTILES THAT COME TO THE LORD IN THIS NEW TESTAMENT AGE OF GRACE. (ROM 11)
    • WHAT WILL BE THE FUTURE ROLE OF GENTILE NATIONS?
      • THEY WILL HELP ISRAEL LEARN TO GROW UP SPIRITUALLY TO BE THE PEOPLE GOD CALLED THEM TO BE. (22-23)
  • APPLICATION :
    • READ MAT 25:14-30
      • DISCUSSION:
        • HOW DOES THIS NEW TESTAMENT PASSAGE RELATE TO ISAIAH 48?
          • GOD CALLED ISRAEL TO BE A SERVANT BUT THEY FAILED TO USE THEIR TALENTS TO INCREASE GOD’S KINGDOM.
          • GOD CALLED JESUS TO BE HIS SERVANT AND FAITHFULLY HE FULFILLS HIS ROLE AS A SERVANT TO INCREASE GOD’S KINGDOM. TODAY HE WINS THE GENTILES, BUT IN THE FUTURE HE WILL WIN THE JEWS.
