PSALMS 85
Lesson #14/P3
EXTREME PRESSURE ON THE JEWS ENDS WITH REPENTANCE AND RESTORATION
- MEMORY VERSE: PSA 85:10
- SUBTITLE: “TO THE CHIEF MUSICIAN, A PSALM FOR THE SONS OF KORAH”
- READ PSA 85:1-13
- BACKGROUND:
- THROUGH THE OLD TESTAMENT, THERE IS A PROFOUND LINK BETWEEN GODS PRESENCE, THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL, THE PROMISED LAND, AND THE MESSIAH.
- FROM THE TIME OF ABRAHAM GOD BEGAN TO SET APART A PEOPLE FROM THE REST OF HUMANITY. THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE WOULD BE GODS CHOSEN PEOPLE, THE ISRAELITES.
- TO THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE GOD PROMISED HIS PRESENCE THROUGH A COVENANT RELATIONSHIP. THIS COVENANT OF GRACE WITH ABRAHAM CARRIED WITH IT A PROMISE THROUGH ISAAC. THE PROMISE WAS FOR LAND.
- READ GEN 12:7
- GOD PROMISED ABRAHAM THAT HE WOULD GIVE ABRAHAMS DESCENDANTS EVERY PIECE OF LAND WHERE HE WALKED. (GEN13:15-17)
- WE KNOW FROM THE ACCOUNT IN GENESIS THAT ABRAHAM WALKED FROM UR (LOCATED IN WHAT IS NOW IRAQ) TO HARAN (LOCATED IN WHAT IS NOW SYRIA), DOWN THROUGH WHAT IS NOW ISRAEL TO EGYPT.
- ISRAEL HAS NEVER POSSESSED ALL OF THIS LAND. NEITHER IS THERE A NATION ON THIS EARTH THAT WOULD FAVOR GIVING ISRAEL ALL OF THIS LAND.
- READ GEN 12:7
- GOD PROMISED HIS PEOPLE A MESSIAH THAT WOULD PERSONALLY REIGN OVER HIS PEOPLE IN A KINGDOM THROUGH THE LINEAGE OF DAVID.
- THEREFORE WE CAN SEE THE NECESSITY OF ESTABLISHING A GEOGRAPHICAL PIECE OF LAND BEFORE THERE CAN EXIST A KINGDOM. IN TURN, THERE CANNOT BE A KINGDOM WITHOUT A KING. ALSO YOU CANNOT HAVE A KINGDOM WITHOUT A PEOPLE TO RULE.
- THIS IS THE PROFOUND LINK BETWEEN, THE PEOPLE, THE LAND, AND THE PERSONAL PRESENCE OF THE MESSIAH. EACH ONE IS DEPENDENT ON THE OTHER TO FULFILL THE PROMISES OF GOD TO ABRAHAM AND TO DAVID.
- THROUGH THE OLD TESTAMENT, THERE IS A PROFOUND LINK BETWEEN GODS PRESENCE, THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL, THE PROMISED LAND, AND THE MESSIAH.
- “Lord, thou hast been favorable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob.”
- IN WHAT TIME PERIOD DOES THIS VERSE REFER?
- THERE ARE TWO TIMES IN THE PAST WHEN GOD BROUGHT ISRSEL BACK TO THE PROMISED LAND FROM CAPTIVITY.
- –FROM CAPTIVITY IN EGYPT, GOD BROUGHT THEM BACK TO THE PROMISED LAND UNDER MOSES AND JOSHUA.
- –FROM CAPTIVITY IN BABYLON, GOD BROUGHT BACK HIS PEOPLE TO THE PROMISED LAND UNDER EZRA.
- HOWEVER, VERSE 2 TELLS US THAT IT IS A TIME WHEN GOD FORGIVES HIS PEOPLE OF THEIR SINS. THIS DID NOT HAPPEN WITH EITHER OF THE TWO RETURN S FROM CAPTIVITY. THE ISRAELITES NEVER REPENTED OF THEIR SINS AND TURNED TO GOD FOR FORGIVENESS.
- THERE ARE TWO TIMES IN THE PAST WHEN GOD BROUGHT ISRSEL BACK TO THE PROMISED LAND FROM CAPTIVITY.
- NOTICE THAT VERSE TWO IS FOLLOWED BY THE WORD, SELAH.
- IF WE STOP AND THINK ABOUT IT, GOD IS STILL WAITING FOR THE ISRAELITES TO REPENT AND TURN TO HIM FOR FORGIVENESS. THAT MEANS THIS PASSAGE IS PROPHETIC AND WE MUST LOOK FOR THE FULFILLMENT OF PSALM 85 IN THE FUTURE.
- IN THE FUTURE PERIOD OF TRIBULATION THAT WILL COME UPON ISRAEL, THE ANTICHRIST THAT SEEK TO CONTROL AND DESTROY ISRAEL AND GODS PEOPLE. HE WILL PUT MANY JEWS IN CAPTIVITY IN EGYPT.
- IT IS FROM THAT CAPTIVITY IN THE FUTURE TO WHICH PSA 85 REFERS.
- JESUS CHRIST WILL COME BACK AT THE SECOND COMING AT THE END OF THE TRIBULATION PERIOD TO SAVE HIS PEOPLE FROM TOTAL DESTRUCTION. THEY WILL RECOGNIZE HIM AS THEIR MESSIAH, AND HE WILL FORGIVE THEIR SINS. (ZEC 12:10 ZEC 13:1)
- (1)
- “Thou hast taken away all thy wrath ”
- DURING THE 7 YEARS OF TRIBULATION BEFORE THE SECOND COMIMG OF JESUS CHRIST, GODS PLAN IS TO PUT PRESSURE UPON HIS PEOPLE TO FORCE THEM TO THE POINT OF ACCEPTING CHRIST. THE TRIBULATION PERIOD IS CALLED “THE TIME OF JACOBS TROUBLE”. (JER 30:7)
- THE LAST HALF OF THE TRIBULATION IS WHEN THE WRATH OF GOD IS POURED OUT UPON THE WORLD, AND WHEN THE JEWS WILL SUFFER THE MOST. IT IS THIS EXTREME PRESSURE THAT WILL FINALLY BRING THE JEWS TO ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR OWN SPIRITUAL EMPTINESS AND TURN TO JESUS CHRIST AS THEIR MESSIAH.
- READ 1THE 1:10
- READ 1THE 5:9
- (3)
- “Turn us o God of our salvation and cause thine anger toward us to cease.”
- THIS IS THE CRY OF ALL THE PROPHETS OF ISRAEL DOWN THROUGH HISTORY AS THEY PLEADED WITH THEIR PEOPLE TO TURN TO GOD, BUT ONLY TO BE DENIED.
- AS TIME PASSED, IT SEEMS AS THOUGH NOTHING WILL CHANGE. “Wilt thou be angry with us forever?…” (5)
- OF COURSE THE ANSWER IS NO. THIS IS THE REASON FOR THIS PSALM, TO ENCOURAGE THE FAITHFUL REMNANT OF JEWS THAT EVENTUALLY ALL THE JEWS WILL TURN TO GOD.
- AT THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST, GODS PEOPLE, THE JEWS, WILL REJOICE IN THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. (6)
- OF COURSE THE ANSWER IS NO. THIS IS THE REASON FOR THIS PSALM, TO ENCOURAGE THE FAITHFUL REMNANT OF JEWS THAT EVENTUALLY ALL THE JEWS WILL TURN TO GOD.
- AS TIME PASSED, IT SEEMS AS THOUGH NOTHING WILL CHANGE. “Wilt thou be angry with us forever?…” (5)
- THEREFORE, IN THIS PRESENT DAY, REBELLIOUS MAN, BOTH JEW AND GENTILE, NEED MERCY AND SALVATION IN JESUS CHRIST. (7)
- THE MILLENNIAL REIGN OF CHRIST:
- AT THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST, WITH THE FORGIVENESS AND SALVATION OF THE JEWS, CHRIST WILL ESTABLISH HIS KINGDOM ON EARTH FOR 1000 YEARS.
- JESUS CHRIST WILL HAVE A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS PEOPLE. HE WILL TEACH THEM HIS TRUTH AND REIGN IN PEACE. (8)
- HOWEVER, NOTICE THAT THERE IS A WARNING IN VERSE 8. “
let them not turn again to folly.”
- WITH CHRIST THE ONLY RULER REIGNING ON EARTH FOR 1000 YEARS, WILL THERE BE THOSE WHO REBEL AGAINST HIS REIGN OF PEACE? YES.
- AWESOME AS IT MAY SEEM, HUMAN NATURE BEING WHAT IT IS IN REBELLION AGAINST GOD, THERE WILL BE SOME HUMANS THAT WILL REBEL AGAINST CHRIST. REBELLION IN THE MILLENNIAL KINGDOM WILL REAP DEATH IN THE END. (REV 20:7-9)
- WITH CHRIST THE ONLY RULER REIGNING ON EARTH FOR 1000 YEARS, WILL THERE BE THOSE WHO REBEL AGAINST HIS REIGN OF PEACE? YES.
- HOWEVER, NOTICE THAT THERE IS A WARNING IN VERSE 8. “
let them not turn again to folly.”
- JESUS CHRIST WILL HAVE A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS PEOPLE. HE WILL TEACH THEM HIS TRUTH AND REIGN IN PEACE. (8)
- AT THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST, WITH THE FORGIVENESS AND SALVATION OF THE JEWS, CHRIST WILL ESTABLISH HIS KINGDOM ON EARTH FOR 1000 YEARS.
- (4)
- “ that glory may dwell in our land.”
- WHILE THIS VERSE REFERS TO THE MILLENNIAL REIGN OF CHRIST, THERE IS A UNIQUE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CERTAIN ELEMENTS IN THE FABRIC OF A NATION THAT PRODUCES GLORY IN SOCIETY. WE SEE THESE ELEMENTS IN VERSES 9 AND 13.
- FEAR OF GOD (AN AWESOME RESPECT FOR GOD AND THE THINGS GOD VALUES) MUST BE PRESENT BEFORE A NATION CAN EXPERIENCE SALVATION.
- –PHYSICAL SALVATION FROM ITS ENEMIES.
- –SPIRITUAL SALVATION THROUGH JESUS CHRIST.
- WHEN MERCY AND TRUTH MEET TOGETHER AND ARE VALUED IN SOCIETY, THEN RIGHTEOUSNESS AND PEACE WILL KISS EACH OTHER
- RIGHTEOUSNESS OR HOLINESS IS THE NATURE OF HEAVEN. WHEN MAN ELEVATES TRUTH ON EARTH, HEAVEN AND EARTH COME TOGETHER.(11)
- GOD WILL BLESS A NATION WITH GOOD WHEN THAT NATION FOLLOWS RIGHTEOUSNESS. (12)
- RIGHTEOUSNESS LEADS THE WAY AND ALL OTHER ASPECTAS OF SOCIETY WILL FOLLOW. (13)
- FEAR OF GOD (AN AWESOME RESPECT FOR GOD AND THE THINGS GOD VALUES) MUST BE PRESENT BEFORE A NATION CAN EXPERIENCE SALVATION.
