PSALMS 80
Lesson #09/P3
CAUSE THY FACE TO SHINE AND WE SHALL BE SAVED

  • MEMORY VERSE: PSA 80:18
  • READ PSA 80:1-7 THE SAD SHEEP
    • SUBTITLE: “to the chief musician upon Shoshannim-eduth. A psalm of Asaph”
      • “SHOSHANNIM-EDUTH” MEANS = LILIES.
        • PSALMS 45 HAD A SIMILAR SUBTITLE CONCERNING LILIES AND REFERRED TO A SONG SUNG FOR THE WEDDING OF THE KING. THAT PSALM HAD SPECIFIC REFERENCES TO THE MESSIAH AND THIS PSALM DOES AS WELL.
    • THE SHEPHERD OF ISRAEL
      • THIS TITLE REFERS TO JESUS CHRIST. IT IS A PROPHETIC PLEA THAT CHRIST, WHO LED THEM IN THE PAST OUT OF EGYPT, THROUGH THE WILDERNESS AND INTO THE PROMISED LAND, WILL LEAD THEM AGAIN.
        • THE FULFILLMENT OF THIS PROPHETIC PLEA WILL BE IN THE MILLENNIAL KINGDOM WHEN JESUS CHRIST WILL REIGN ON EARTH FOR 1000 YEARS.
        • THE JEWS WILL BE HIS SHEEP AND HE WILL BE THEIR SHEPHERD.
    • EPHRAIM, BENJAMIN, AND MANASSEH (2)
      • READ NUM 2:17-24
        • THESE THREE TRIBES WERE BEHIND THE ARK OF THE COVENANT AS THEY MARCHED THROUGH THE WILDERNESS.
    • THE REPEATED CHORUS: (3)
      • THIS VERSE IS REPEATED THREE TIMES IN THIS PSALM BECAUSE IT IS THE CHORUS OF THE SONG. (3, 7, 19)
    • SADNESS IS EXPRESSED WHEN THE PEOPLE FEEL THAT GOD DOES NOT ANSWER THEIR PRAYERS. (4-6)
      • THERE ARE TIMES WHEN CHRISTIANS ARE PASSING THROUGH DIFFICULT TIMES, AND WHEN THE DIFFICULTIES PERSIST, THEY FEEL THAT GOD DOES NOT ANSWER.
        • GOD ALWAYS ANSWERS THE PRAYERS OF HIS PEOPLE. HIS ANSWERS ARE EITHER “YES”, “NO”, OR “WAIT”.
        • IT IS IN THE PATIENCE OF WAITING THAT HUMAN NATURE LOSES FAITH AND THINKS THAT GOD DOES NOT CARE TO SEND AN ANSWER.
          • HOWEVER, THIS IS THE TRIAL OF PERSISTENT FAITH THAT GOD REQUIRES OF BELIEVERS.
            • FOR THE BELIEVER THAT IS TRULY SEEKING THE PERFECT WILL OF GOD, THE LACK OF AN IMMEDIATE ANSWER IS DUE TO GOD’S PERFECT TIMING.
          • IT IS USUALLY NOT ANGER THAT KEEPS GOD FROM BRINGING THE ANSWERS TO PRAYERS, ONLY UNREPENTED, PERSISTENT SIN ANGERS GOD IN THIS WAY.
            • FOR THE ISRAELITES, THIS WAS THEIR SITUATION. THEY WERE A STUBBORN PEOPLE AND GOD HAD TO CONTINUALLY CHASTISE THEM.
              • THIS PSALM SAYS THAT GOD SENT THEM TEARS FOR BREAD AND DRINK. THIS IS THE SADNESS OF GOD’S PEOPLE THAT THEY MUST SUFFER BECAUSE OF THEIR REBELLIOUS ATTITUDE IN THE REJECTION OF THEIR SHEPHERD, JESUS CHRIST.
                • READ LUK 19:41-44
                • READ LUK 23:28
    • THE PLEA IN THE FORM OF A CHORUS IN THIS PSALM IS A PLEA FOR A SECOND CHANCE. (7) OF COURSE GOD WILL GIVE THEM A SECOND CHANCE AT THE SECOND COMING.

    • READ PSA 80:8-19 THE PLANTED VINE
    • THE ILLUSTRATION IS CHANGED FROM SHEEP TO A VINEYARD. (8)
      • GOD PLANTED ISRAEL LIKE A VINE IN THE PROMISED LAND. HE SPECIFICALLY BROUGHT THEM OUT OF SLAVERY IN EGYPT FOR THIS PURPOSE. IN ORDER TO PLANT THEM IN THE LAND, HE CAUSED THE DEFEAT OF THE PAGAN TRIBES.
      • GOD GAVE THE ISRAELITES THE ABILITY TO PRODUCE MANY CHILDREN TO FILL THE LAND. (9) THEY POSSESSED THE LAND BETWEEN THE JORDAN RIVER AND THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA. (11)
        • NO OTHER NATION HAS BEEN GIVEN THE SAME ADVANTAGES BY GOD THAN THE ISRAELITES.
          • OTHER NATIONS HAVE TOTALLY DISAPPEARED, BUT GOD STILL MAINTAINS HIS PEOPLE BY GUARDING THEM AGAINST GENOCIDE.
          • GOD PUT A HEDGE OF PROTECTION AROUND HIS PEOPLE FOR OVER 600 YEARS. HOWEVER, EVENTUALLY GOD REMOVED THE HEDGE OF PROTECTION TO PERMIT THE ASSYRIANS AND BABYLONIANS TO DESTROY THE PROMISED LAND. WHY DID GOD REMOVE HIS PROTECTION?
            • THE ISRAELITES HAD REJECTED GOD AND REPLACED HIM WITH IDOL WORSHIP.
          • GOD REESTABLISHED HIS HEDGE OF PROTECTION WHEN THE ISRAELITES RETURN ED FROM THE BABYLONIAN CAPTIVITY. HOWEVER, EVEN THOUGH THEY HAD NOT RETURN ED TO IDOLATRY, THEY DID NOT ACCEPT GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY OVER THEM. THEREFORE, GOD WOULD HAVE TO REMOVE HIS PROTECTION AGAIN.
            • IN 70 AD THE ROMANS DESTROYED THE TEMPLE AND JERUSALEM IN. (12)
              • WHAT SPECIFIC EVENT CAUSED GOD TO REVMOVE THE HEDGE OF PROTECTION FROM ISRAEL?
                • THE REMOVAL OF PROTECTION IS SPECIFICALLY RELATED TO ISRAEL’S REJECTION OF THE MESSIAH AT HIS FIRST COMING.
          • NOTICE THAT THE HEDGE OF PROTECTION WAS NOT ONLY A PROTECTION FROM EXTERNAL ENEMIES BUT ALSO FROM INTERNAL ONES. (13)
            • THE CAUSES OF A NATION’S FALL ARE USUALLY NOT SIMPLY AN ETERNAL ENEMY. THE GREATER WEAKNESS THAT FACILITATES THE EXTERNAL ENEMY IS THE WEAKNESS FROM WITHIN THAT MAKES THE NATION VULNERABLE. THIS INTERNAL WEAKNESS IS REPRESENTED IN VERSE 13 BY “THE BOAR OUT OF THE WOOD”.
              • THIS IS AN INSECT THAT EATS THE VINE FROM WITHIN.
    • THE PRAYER THAT GOD WILL RETURN HIS PROTECTIVE HAND OVER ISRAEL. (14-19)

…the man of thy right hand…”

        (17)

        • THE PHRASE “right hand” REFERS TO THE BIBLICAL PLACE OF POWER, AUTHORITY, AND FAVOR.
          • WHEN RACHEL GAVE BIRTH TO A SON. SHE WANTED TO CALL HIM, BEN-OMI WHICH MEANS = “SON OF MY SUFFERING”
          • WHEN JACOB SAW THIS SON, HE DECIDED TO NAME HIM BENJAMIN WHICH MEANS = “SON OF MY RIGHT HAND”.
        • WITH THIS EVENT OF BENJAMIN’S BIRTH, IT IS A PROPHETIC PREFIGURE OF THE MESSIAH’S TWO COMINGS.
          • JESUS CHRIST CAME THE FIRST TIME TO BE THE SON OF SUFFERING.
          • WHEN JESUS CHRIST COMES THE SEND TIME, HE WILL BE THE SON OF POWER AND AUTHORITY.
        • WHO IS THE MAN AT GOD’S RIGHT HAND?
          • IT IS THE MESSIAH, JESUS CHRIST.
            • READ PSA 110:1
            • READ MAT 22:44
    • THE PSALM ENDS WITH A PLEA AND A PROMISE.

  • “Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.”

    • THE PSALM ENDS WITH THE CHORUS THAT IF GOD GIVES THEM ANOTHER CHANCE, THEY WILL BE SAVED.
      • IT IS AT THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST THAT FINALLY THE ISRAELITES WILL ACCEPT THE SHEPHERD MESSIAH. THEY WILL RECEIVE THE SON AT GOD’S RIGHT HAND AND BECOME GOD’S PEOPLE.
  • REVIEW AND APPLICATION:
  • WHAT OBJECTS ARE USED TO REPRESENT GOD’S PEOPLE?
    • THE SHEEP
    • THE VINES
  • WHAT OBJECTS ARE USED TO REPRESENT CHRIST?
    • THE SHEPHERD
    • THE GARDNER
    • THE MAN OF GOD’S RIGHT HAND
  • FOR THE NEW TESTAMENT BELIEVER, THE PLEA IS THE SAME AS IT WAS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT.
    • THE BELIEVER MUST ACKNOWLEDGE GOD’S LORDSHIP OVER HIS THE LIFE. JESUS CHRIST WANTS TO BE LORD AND SAVIOR IN YOUR LIFE.
    • AS THE BELIEVER, IN HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST, PERMITS GOD’S DAILY GUIDANCE, GOD’S BLESSINGS AND PROTECTION BECOME PART OF THE BELIEVER’S EXPERIENCE.
