PSALMS 40 AND 41
LESSON #31
CRUCIFIXION AND BETRAYAL

MEMORY VERSE: PSA 40:2

PSALMS 40 AND 41 ARE MESSIANIC PSALMS BECAUSE THE ARE QUOTED IN THE NEW TESTAMENT ABOUTJESUS CHRIST. THEREFORE, THEY ARE PROPHETIC PSALMS THAT PREDICT THE CRUCIFIXION.

PSALM 40

PRIMARY INTERPRETATION AND PROPHETIC INTERPRETATION:

THIS PSALM RELATES TO DAVID AND HIS FLIGHT FROM ABSALOM.
READ 2SAMUEL 15:10, 14,23-26.
READ PSA 40:1-17
WHILE THERE IS MUCH IN THIS PSALM THAT RELATES TO DAVID’S SITUATION, IT PRIMARILYRELATES TO THE CRUCIFIXION.
WHAT DETAILS IN THIS PSALM REMIND YOU OF THE CRUCIFIXION?
1. THE RESURRECTION (2).
2. MANY PEOPLE WILL LEARN OF THE CRUCIFIXION AND BE MOVED TO FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST (3)(16)
3. THE SACRIFICES AND OFFERINGS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT, WHICH WERE ESTABLISHED BY GOD, DIDNOT SATISFY GOD. (6) WHY?
THEY WERE GIVEN BY GOD AS A SYMBOL TO POINT TO THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS CHRIST THAT WOULDCOME. THEY DID NOT SATISFY GOD BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT MEANT TO SAVE ANYONE. THEY ONLYREMINDED MAN OF HIS SIN.
“…MINE EARS HAST THOU OPENED…” (6)
THIS PHRASE DOES NOT MEAN WHAT IT APPEARS TO MEAN ON THE SURFACE.
YOU WOULD THINK IT MEANT THAT THE PERSON SIMPLY BEGAN TO LISTEN TO GOD.
HOWEVER, THERE IS AN OLD TESTAMENT PRACTICE TO WHICH THIS REFERS.

READ EXO 21:2-6 THE LOVE SERVANT
IF A SERVANT LOVED HIS MASTER AND HIS FAMILY, HE COULD GIVE UP HIS FREEDOM AND BECOME ALOVE SERVANT FOR LIFE. TO DO THIS, HE WOULD HAVE HIS EAR PIERCED.
HOW DOES THIS RELATE TO JESUS CHRIST?

READ HEB 10:5
NOTICE THAT HEB 10:5 IS QUOTING PSA 40:6. HOWEVER, INSTEAD OF QUOTING “MINE EARS HASTTHOU OPENED”, HEBREWS SAYS, “A BODY HAST THOU PREPARED ME.” IN OTHER WORDS,IT WAS NOT JESUS’ EAR THAT WAS PIERCED, BUT HIS BODY IN THE CRUCIFIXION. HE WAS THEULTIMATE LOVE SERVANT.
THE PRACTICE OF THE PIERCING OF THE LOVE SERVANT WAS TO BE A PROPHETIC SYMBOL OF THECRUCIFIXION.

READ ISA 50:5-6
THIS SCRIPTURE, TOO, IS PROPHETIC OF THE CRUCIFIXION. SEE HOW CONSISTENT THE BIBLE IS OVERHUNDREDS OF YEARS!
4. “…I COME IN THE VOLUME OF THE BOOK, IT IS WRITTEN OF ME” (7)
THIS TELLS US THAT THE WHOLE BIBLE IS WRITTEN ABOUT AND POINTS TO JESUS CHRIST.
5. JESUS DELIGHTED TO DO GOD’S WILL EVEN THOUGH HIS FLESH DID NOT WANT TO GO TO THECROSS. (8)  (JOH 17:5-7)
6. JESUS WAS WITHOUT SIN, BUT HE BECAME SIN FOR US ON THE CROSS. THEREFORE, PSA 40:12SAYS, “MINE INIQUITIES HAVE TAKEN HOLD UPON ME, SO THAT I AM NOT ABLE TO LOOKUP…”
JESUS IDENTIFIES HIMSELF WITH US WHEN HE TOOK OUR SINS ON THE CROSS.
7. JESUS SUFFERED A BROKEN HEART IN THE GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE. (12) (LUK 22:44)
8. SATAN THOUGHT HE WON THE VICTORY AT THE CRUCIFIXION. (15)
THE WORDS, “AHA, AHA” (15) ARE THE SATANIC “AMEN”.
HOWEVER, GOD WINS IN THE END WITH THE RESURRECTION. (16)

PERSONAL APPLICATION:

IF WE ARE TO BECOME LIKE JESUS CHRIST, WE MUST FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE OF PAUL, JAMES,PETER, AND JOHN AND BECOME LOVE SERVANTS OF CHRIST. (ROM 1:1 GAL 1:10 TIT 1:1 JAM 1:1 2PET1:1 JUDE 1:1)

READ 1COR 7:22-24

PSALM 41 A PSALM OF BETRAYAL

THE PRIMARY INTERPRETATION:

PSALM 41 RELATES TO AN EVENT IN DAVID’S LIFE CONCERNING A TRUSTED MEMBER OFDAVID’S GOVERNMENT. THE MAN’S NAME IS AHITHOPHEL.
WHO WAS AHITHOPHEL?
HIS NAME MEANS “BROTHER OF FOOLISHNESS.”
HE WAS DAVID’S RESPECTED COUNSELOR (2SAM 16:23)
HOWEVER, HE FOOLISHLY BETRAYED DAVID, AND COUNSELED ABSALOM IN HOW TO TAKE OVER THEKINGDOM FROM HIS FATHER.
READ 2SAM 15:12,31 2SAM 16:20-23 2SAM 17:1-4, 23
DAVID WAS BETRAYED BY A TRUSTED FRIEND WHO TURNED AGAINST HIM AND PLOTTED THE OVERTHROW OFDAVID’S KINGDOM AS WELL AS DAVID’S DEATH. HE COUNSELED ABSALOM TO TAKEPOSSESSION OF DAVID’S HAREM. WHOEVER POSSESSED THE KING’S HAREM CONTROLLED THETHRONE. THIS ACT WAS TO DEMONSTRATE TO THE PEOPLE ABSALOM’S AUTHORITY OVER THEKINGDOM AND THE THRONE. WHEN ABSALOM DID NOT IMMEDIATELY SEND A BIG ARMY TO KILL DAVIDACCORDING TO AHITHOPHEL’S COUNSEL, AHITHOPHEL KILLED HIMSELF.

THE PROPHETIC INTERPRETATION:

READ PSA 41:1-13
NOT ONLY DO WE SEE A BETRAYAL IN THE LIFE OF DAVID BY “MINE OWN FAMILIAR FRIEND”(9), BUT WE ALSO SEE THE BETRAYAL OF JESUS CHRIST.
HE WAS BETRAYED BY HIS “OWN FAMILIAR FRIEND”, JUDAS. (MAT 26:49-50) (JOH13:18-19) PSA 41:9-12 ESPECIALLY REFERS TO JESUS.
WE SEE THE RESURRECTION IN VERSE 10.
WE SEE THE ASCENSION IN VERSE 12 WHERE GOD HAS SET JESUS “BEFORE (HIS) FACEFOREVER”.
WE SEE THE ULTIMATE PRAISE AND TRIUMPH OF GOD IN VERSE 13 WITH A DOUBLE, “AMEN”(SO BE IT!). IT IS DOUBLE BECAUSE SATAN’S “AHA” WAS DOUBLE.
BECAUSE OF THIS PSALM, WE CAN SAY THAT THE MAN, AHITHOPHEL, IS A PROPHETIC PREFIGURE OFJUDAS.
NOTICE THAT BOTH AHITHOPHEL AND JUDAS CAME TO THE SAME END. THEY BOTH TOOK THEIR OWNLIVES.

APPLICATION:

THERE ARE TIMES WHEN CLOSE FRIENDS BETRAY US. IT IS VERY HARD TO ENDURE, AND TO BE ONTHE RECEIVING END OF THIS KIND OF TREATMENT. IN FACT IT BREAKS YOUR HEART. HOWEVER, IF YOUARE LIVING FOR GOD, YOU CAN BE ENCOURAGED THAT GOD WILL CAUSE YOU TO TRIUMPH IN THE END.YOU HAVE TWO GOOD EXAMPLES TO FOLLOW…DAVID AND JESUS CHRIST.
HOWEVER, THERE MAY BE TIMES WHEN YOU ARE THE BETRAYER, HEAVEN FORBID.
THERE ARE SOME TRUTHS OF WHICH YOU SHOULD BE AWARE:
BETRAYAL IS THE WORK OF SATAN.
SATAN USES BETRAYAL TO ATTEMPT THE DEFEAT OF GOD’S WORK AND GOD’S APPOINTEDLEADERS.
A LACK OF SUBMISSION TO AUTHORITY IS BETRAYAL.

CONCLUSION:

WE HAVE FINISHED THIS FIRST SECTION OF THE PSALMS CALLED, “THE GENESISSECTION”. IN IT WE HAVE OBSERVED THE FAILURE OF MAN TO OBEY GOD; THE PROMISE OF THEPERFECT MAN, JESUS CHRIST WHO WOULD TAKE OUR SINS ON HIMSELF ON THE CROSS. WE HAVEEXAMINED MANY OF LIFE’S PROBLEMS AS A RESULT OF LIVING IN A SINFUL WORLD, AS WELL ASGOD’S VICTORIES IF WE WOULD ONLY TRUST HIM.
PSALMS IS A BOOK OF PRAISE. THERE IS PRAISE TO GOD IN EVERY PSALM. THEREFORE, IN OUR STUDYWE LEARNED THAT IN WHATEVER CONDITION OR CIRCUMSTANCE IN WHICH WE FIND OURSELVES, WE MUSTPRAISE GOD.
THERE ARE 7 BIBLICAL ASPECTS OF PRAISE FROM THE HEBREW WORDS IN THE BOOK OF PSALMS:
1. Yadah = TO EXTEND THE HAND TO BLESS THE LORD. A SILENT FORM OF PRAISEACCOMPLISHED BY THE BODY.  PSA 63:4 PSA 134:2 PSA 141:2
2. Towdah = THANKSGIVING. THE EXTENSION OF THE HAND TO GIVE THANKS OR GRATITUDE FORSOMETHING THAT YOU EXPECT GOD TO DO. THERE IS AN ATTITUDE OF EXPECTATION.   JER17:26 PSA 100:4 PSA 33:11 PSA 69:30 PSA 50:23 2COR 10:5 EPH 5:18,20
3. Halah = TO BE CLEAR, TO SHINE, TO BOAST, TO CELEBRATE, TO CRY UNTO HIM.   PSA 66:8,17 ACT 16:34
4. Shabach = TO ADDRESS IN A LOUD TONE, TO SHOUT, TO COMMAND.  PSA 47:1 PSA117:1 PSA 35:27
5. Barak = TO KNEEL, TO BLESS, QUIET, REVERENT, DIGNIFIED, EXPECTING GOD TO DOSOMETHING FOR YOU; HE WILL DELIVER IF YOU HUMBLE YOURSELF AND BOW BEFORE HIM.    PSA 72:12-15 JDG 5:2 PSA 95:6 EPH 3:14 PHIL 2:10-11
6. Zamar = INSTRUMENTAL PRAISE; TO TOUCH THE STRINGS OF A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT. PSA150
7. Tehillah = VOCAL PRAISE; TO SING. SINGING IS THE HIGHEST FORM OF PRAISE. WHY ISTHAT? BECAUSE OUT OF THE MOUTH, THE HEART SPEAKS. (MAT 12:34)  PSA 22:3 PSA 100:4
THEREFORE, REMEMBER TO PRAISE THE LORD NO MATTER WHAT!

THE END

GOD BLESS YOU
