PSALM 18 continued
LESSON #13
EVENTS BETWEEN THE CRUCIFIXION AND THE RESURRECTION
MEMORY VERSE: PSALMS 98:1
THE PROPHETIC INTERPRETATION:
WHAT ONE MAJOR EVENT IN THE LIFE OF JESUS CHRIST DO YOU THINK THIS PSALM REFERS?
THE PROPHETIC INTERPRETATION OF THIS PSALM IS THE MOST IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT RELATES TOJESUS CHRIST AND THE CRUCIFIXION. THAT IS WHY GOD HAS PUT IT INTO THE BIBLE TWO TIMES. HEWANTED TO MAKE SURE WE DID NOT MISS THE MESSAGE.
HOW DO WE KNOW THIS PSALM RELATES TO THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS CHRIST?
VERSE 5 SAYS, “THE SORROWS OF HELL COMPASSED ME ABOUT; THE SNARES OF DEATH WERE ROUNDABOUT ME.”
THIS COULD NOT REFER TO DAVID BECAUSE WHEN DAVID WROTE THIS, HE WAS NOT IN HELL. HOWEVER,JESUS CHRIST WAS.
READ EPH 4:8-10 COL 2:15 1PET 3:18-21
THESE SCRIPTURES ALONG WITH PSALM 18 TELL US WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE 3 DAYS AND 3 NIGHTSWHEN JESUS WAS IN THE TOMB. TODAY IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE UNDERSTAND WHAT THE BIBLETEACHES ABOUT THIS BECAUSE THERE IS A FAITH TEACHING IN THE “FAITH MOVEMENT”WHICH IS PREVALENT TODAY THAT BEARS CLOSE EXAMINATION ALONGSIDE SCRIPTURE.
THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH TEACHING:
JESUS ENDURED THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS OF UNIMAGINABLE ABUSE IN HELL AT THE HANDS OFSATAN AND HIS DEMONS TO COMPLETE THE WORK OF REDEMPTION. OUR REDEMPTION WAS ULTIMATELYPURCHASED IN HELL WHERE HE SUFFERED OUR PUNISHMENT SPIRITUALLY. :
” SATAN AND ALL THE DEMONS OF HELL…THREW A NET OVER JESUS AND THEY DRAGGED HIM DOWNTO THE VERY PIT OF HELLITSELF TO SERVE OUR SENTENCE.”. — FRED PRICE “EVERINCREASING FAITH MESSENGER” JUNE 1980.
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT THE 3 DAYS AND 3 NIGHTS:
1. JESUS’ BODY WAS BURIED IN THE TOMB FOR 3 DAYS AND 3 NIGHTS.
MAT 12:40 SAYS, “IN THE HEART OF THE EARTH”. THIS MEANS THE TOMB OR GRAVE.
IN THIS PASSAGE, THE COMPARISON IS MADE BETWEEN JESUS AND JONAH. WAS JONAH 3 DAYS AND 3NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE FISH PHYSICALLY OR SPIRITUALLY?
OBVIOUSLY IT IS TALKING ABOUT JONAH’S PHYSICAL BODY.
THEREFORE, MAT 12:40 REFERS TO JESUS’ PHYSICAL BODY THAT WAS BURIED IN THE TOMB FOR THREEDAYS AND THREE NIGHTS.
2. JESUS’ SPIRIT WENT TO HADES (HELL) OR SHEOL (HELL) DURING THOSE 3 DAYS AND 3 NIGHTS. (EPH 4:8-10)
HADES AND SHEOL ARE TRANSLATED “HELL” IN THE KING JAMES BIBLE. (HADES IS THEGREEK WORD, WHILE SHEOL IS THE HEBREW WORD).
THROUGH OLD TESTAMENT TIMES BEFORE THE CROSS, THE CONCEPT OF SHEOL WAS THAT WHEN A PERSONDIED, HIS BODY WAS BURIED BUT HIS SPIRIT WENT TO EITHER ONE OF TWO PLACES IN SHEOL. IF HEWAS A NON-BELIEVER, HIS SPIRIT WENT TO A PLACE CALLED “TORMENT” IN SHEOL. IF HEWAS A BELIEVER, HIS SPIRIT WENT TO A PLACE CALLED “ABRAHAM’S BOSOM”. YOU CAN SEETHIS DESCRIPTIVELY DESCRIBED BY JESUS IN THE STORY OF THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS IN LUKE16:20-31. THIS WAS NOT A PARABLE BUT A TRUE STORY TOLD BY JESUS BEFORE THE CRUCIFIXION.
3. WHICH SIDE OF HADES (SHEOL) DID JESUS’ SPIRIT GO?
HE WENT TO BOTH THE TORMENT SIDE OF HELL AS WELL AS THE SIDE CALLED ABRAHAM’S BOSOM. BUTREMEMBER THAT HIS SPIRIT IS IN GOD HANDS ACCORDING TO LUK 23:46 (“…FATHER INTO THYHANDS I COMMEND MY SPIRIT.”)
A. HE WENT TO THE TORMENT SIDE:
1PET 3:18-21 TELLS US WHAT HE DID THERE. HE
PREACHED TO THE SPIRITS IN PRISON. HOW DO WE KNOW THIS WAS THE TORMENT SIDE? IT SAYS THEYWERE IN PRISON. NOTICE THE REFERENCE TO THE SOULS OF NOAH’S DAY IN VERSE 20.
SCRIPTURE DOES NOT TELL US SPECIFICALLY WHY HE PREACHED TO THESE NON-BELIEVERS OF NOAH’SDAY, NOR WHAT HE PREACHED.
WE DO KNOW THAT HE DID NOT GIVE THEM A SECOND CHANCE TO BE SAVED, BECAUSE NO ONE GETS ASECOND CHANCE. A PERSON HAS ONE LIFE. THAT IS HIS ONLY CHANCE TO ACCEPT THE LORD.
WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT THE NON-BELIEVERS
OF NOAH’S DAY AND NON-BELIEVERS OF ANY
OTHER AGE? ONLY ONE THING IS DIFFERENT—IN THAT AGE THEY WERE THE VAST MAJORITY OF HUMANBEINGS WHO DIED ALL AT THE SAME TIME BECAUSE OF UNBELIEF.
DOES SCRIPTURE GIVE US ANY INDICATION OF WHAT JESUS DID IN THE TORMENT SIDE OF HADES(SHEOL)?
YES. PSA 18 IS A PROPHETIC PICTURE OF THIS EVENT.
PSALM 18 JESUS IN THE TORMENT SIDE OF HELL:
ACCORDING TO PSALM 18, YOU CAN SEE THAT JESUS WAS NOT TORMENTED THERE, BUT HE DISPLAYEDHIS VICTORY TO AND OVER SATAN AND HIS DEMONS.
READ PSA 18:4-6
THE CRUCIFIED JESUS APPEARS TO BE AT THE MERCY OF HELL WHEN HE CRIES TO GOD, THE FATHER,FOR HELP.
READ PSA 18:7-15
WE SEE THE ANGER AND THE POWER OF GOD, THE FATHER, COMING TO THE AID OF JESUS, THE SON.
NOTICE THAT THERE IS AN EARTHQUAKE IN
PSA 18:7 WHICH YOU CAN SEE AGAIN IN MAT 27:52
WHEN PEOPLE WERE RAISED FROM THE DEAD AFTER THE CRUCIFIXION.
READ PSA 18:16-19
THIS IS WHERE YOU SEE THE RESURRECTION TAKING PLACE.
READ PSA 18:20-24
THE PERFECT RIGHTEOUSNESS OF JESUS CHRIST ENABLES GOD, THE FATHER, TO REWARD HIS SON WITHRESURRECTED LIFE. JESUS WAS FAITHFUL AND OBEDIENT TO GOD AND THE RESURRECTION WAS THEREWARD.
READ PSA 18::32-42
IN THIS PASSAGE WE SEE THE VICTORY OF JESUS CHRIST OVER SATAN AND HIS DEMONS.
READ PSA 18:43-46
THE FUTURE BELIEVERS IN JESUS CHRIST BELIEVE IN HIM BECAUSE HE LIVES. (46)
READ PSA 18:47-50
THE ULTIMATE VICTORY OF JESUS CHRIST.
DOES THE NEW TESTAMENT AGREE WITH PSA 18?
YES. COL 2:15.
HE WON THE VICTORY BEFORE HE EVER ARRIVED IN HELL.
HEB 2:14-15 SAYS THAT HIS DEATH DESTROYED HIM (SATAN) WHO HOLDS THE POWER OF DEATH. THATSPECIFICALLY MEANS THAT THE CRUCIFIXION WON THE VICTORY AND DESTROYED SATAN’S POWER, ANDNOT BY ANY PUNISHMENT IN HELL.
B. WHAT DID JESUS DO IN THE “ABRAHAM’S BOSOM” SIDE OF SHEOL?
HE MOVED THE CAPTIVE BELIEVERS AS WELL AS THE PLACE ITSELF UP INTO HEAVEN. SEE EPH 4:8.
THE CAPTIVES WERE OLD TESTAMENT BELIEVERS WHO TRUSTED IN THE COMING MESSIAH BY FAITH. HOWDO WE KNOW HE MOVED ABRAHAM’S BOSOM UP TO HEAVEN? IN LUKE 23:43 HE SAID TO THE THIEF ONTHE CROSS WHO BELIEVED IN CHRIST AT THE LAST MOMENT, THAT HE WOULD BE WITH JESUS IN PARADISE.ABRAHAM’S BOSOM IS NEVER REFERRED TO IN THE NEW TESTAMENT AFTER THE CRUCIFIXION.THEREFORE, IT IS NOW IN HEAVEN AND IT IS CALLED “PARADISE”. IT IS THE PLACEWHERE A BELIEVER’S SPIRIT GOES WHEN HE DIES TO WAIT FOR THE RESURRECTION.
IN THE PROCESS OF MOVING ABRAHAM’S BOSOM TO HEAVEN AND MAKING IT PARADISE IS PROBABLY WHENSOME PEOPLE WERE RAISED FROM THE DEAD.(MAT 27:52.)
5. ON THE THIRD DAY, JESUS RAISED FROM THE DEAD, BUT HE WOULD NOT PERMIT MARY TO TOUCHHIM. (JOH 20:17) WHY?
PROBABLY BECAUSE HE HAD NOT YET PLACED HIS BLOOD IN THE HEAVENLY TABERNACLE FOR THEREMISSION OF SINS.
READ HEB 8:1-2
AS OUR HIGH PRIEST, HE HAD TO SPRINKLE HIS SHED BLOOD ON THE ALTAR IN HEAVEN JUST AS THEOLD TESTAMENT PRIESTS SPRINKLED THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB ON THE ARK OF THE COVENANT. ONCE HEHAD DONE THAT, HE APPEARED MANY TIMES TO HIS DISCIPLES AND, LIKE THOMAS, THEY TOUCHED HIM.
