JOSHUA 12
Lesson #13
SPIRITUAL WARFARE

  • Memory verse: Ephesians 6:18
  • The armies of the twelve tribes of Israelites won their victories on the East side of the Jordan River and on the West side of the Jordan River. While the pagan tribal armies are defeated along with the king of each important city by the strength of all 12 tribes of Israel, the individual tribes of Israel must now take possession of the cities in their own tribal territory.
  • Read Joshua 12:1,7,24
    • The list of kings conquered by Moses and Joshua:
      • Verses 1-6 the campaign on the east side of the Jordan River led by Moses.
      • Verses 7-24 the campaign on the west side of the Jordan River led by Joshua. The northern and southern campaigns took 7 years.
    • With the armies and political leaders defeated, the individual tribes must possess the cities, subdue them, and establish governmental order.
      • With Satan defeated at the cross, we as individuals have to take the areas of promise in our own character and put our lives in order.
      • In all there were 31 kings (24).
      • We must subdue 31 aspects of self to come to Christian maturity.
        • The 31 aspects of self:

Anger

Anxiety

Apathy

Bitterness

Blasphemy

Callousness (Insensitive)

Covetousness

Deceit

Domineering Control

Drunkenness

Envy

Fear

Gossip

Greed

Hatred

Laziness

Lust

Lying

Malice

Manipulation

Pride

Rebellion

Resentment

Revenge

Self-pity

Sexual Sins

Strife

Stubbornness

Wantonness

Worry

Wrath

    • How are these enemies of the flesh defeated?
      • By knowing that the “old man” or old nature is dead and the believer does not have to respond in the way he used to respond before coming to know Christ. (Rom 6:6-12)
      • Put on the armor of light. (Rom 13:12) We will talk more about this armor of light later in our lesson.
    • From where does temptation come? There are 3 sources:
      • =1= It comes from the world system that is controlled by Satan (2Cor 4:4), and governed by fallen man.
      • =2= It comes from the flesh nature that every human possesses having inherited it from Adam. (Rom 5:12)
      • =3= It comes from Satan, the enemy of God that seeks to destroy those that belong to God.(1Pet 5:8)
    • A good defense is to know your enemy!
      • Read Eph 6:12-18 and Eph 1:21 The hierarchy:
        • God
        • The third heaven
        • (2Cor 12:2) The location of God’s throne.

        • The starry heavens:
          • Principalities or principality
          • Powers or power
          • Rulers of darkness or might
          • Dominion
          • Spiritual wickedness in high places
          • Every name against God
        • The atmospheric heavens
        • = The air that we breathe.

        • The earth
      • Satan’s kingdom defined:
        • Read Dan 10:12-13
          • Principalities = spiritual forces over geographical areas of the world.
          • Powers and dominions = spiritual forces that influence world government leaders.
          • Wickedness in high places: = spiritual forces that influence important people in our social and political world.
        • When God created this world, He gave Adam dominion over it. When Adam sinned, he gave his God-given authority to Satan. Satan now exercises power as the god of this world. (Gen 1:26 2Cor 4:4)
        • Satan has divided this world into areas of demonic powers controlled by his demons.
    • What are our spiritual weapons?
      • The whole armor of God is given to the believer in Jesus Christ. This is the armor of light:
        • The Helmet of Salvation
          • We are free from the penalty of sin.
            • The penalty of sin is spiritual death.
            • With Jesus Christ in the heart, the believer has the forgiveness of sin through the blood of Jesus Christ.
          • We are free from the presence of sin.
            • The presence of sin is the constant availability of temptation around us.
            • Satan makes evil appear attractive and inviting.
          • We are free from the power of sin.
            • Through the new birth experience, the believer is now free from the compelling power to sin.
            • He can now make a choice for God instead of a choice for Satan.
          • This piece of armor covers the thoughts of man. Every thought should be guarded against the enemy. Read 2Cor 10:5.
            • We are saved by having been justified in the past.
              • Jesus’ death on the cross some 2000 years ago made justification possible for the believer today.
              • Now the believer is just before God through the shed blood of Jesus Christ.
            • We are saved by being sanctified in the present.
              • The Holy Spirit is working constantly in the heart and mind to make the believer mature and more like Christ.
              • This is sanctification, the gradual process of maturity.
            • We are saved looking forward to our glorification in the future.
              • At the rapture of the church, Jesus Christ will RETURN to change this human body to an incorruptible body.
              • This glorification of the body will destroy the flesh nature that causes the desire to sin.
          • Salvation is in no one other than Jesus Christ, (Luk 2:30 Joh 14:6)
            • There is no other means by which a person can gain eternal life which is our salvation.
            • When the believer has been born again he has a new life in Christ.
            • That new life gives the believer the potential not just to be saved at one point in time on receiving Christ, but the potential to walk in his salvation on a daily basis as he lives the Christian life by the power of the Holy Spirit.
        • The Shield of Faith
          • It is the confidence that no temptation will be beyond what we can bear except He will make a way of escape
            • Read 1Cor 10:13
            • The sovereignty of God is in control of the life of a believer.
            • God has provided every weapon the believer needs to defeat any temptation.
            • Through the blood of Jesus Christ He has made a way of escape for us and that way is only through Christ.
            • Jesus defeated temptation by quoting the Word of God. (Mat 4:1-4)
          • This piece of armor is a movable piece able to come to your defense from any angle. The Roman shield had hooks on the sides able to be hooked to the next shield to form an unbroken line, just like the way we are stand together with fellow believers, (Hebrews 10:24-25)
          • We live by the faith that Jesus gives us.
            • Every believer receives a measure of faith when he is born again. (Rom 12:3)
            • It is the believer’s responsibility to make that faith grow by studying the Word of God. (Rom 10:17)
        • The Breastplate of Righteousness
          • It covers the heart of man, and it is acquired by faith. (Rom 5:5).
          • We need to guard our hearts from evil.
          • The condition that God first intended for man to have was righteousness and now it is Christ’s righteousness over the believer. He is the only righteous one. (2Cor 5:21)
          • The believer comes to identify himself with the righteousness of Christ by studying the Word of God to learn about the character and nature of Jesus Christ.
        • Girdle of Truth
          • The Roman soldier wore a long robe that was not efficient for battle. Therefore, he tied it up to free his legs for battle. We need to tie the truth of God to us so that we do not become entangled with the things of the world and stumble over them when we try to live the Christian life.
          • We need the growing knowledge of Jesus Christ to fight the battle, (2Tim 2:15)
          • There is the eternal truth of God only in Jesus Christ. (Joh 14:6)
            • When the believer in Christ filters everything through the grid of God’s truth, he will make wise decisions in his life
            • A life established on the truth of God will hold everything together so as to move through life more easily.
        • The Sword of the Spirit
          • Jesus used the Word of God to fight Satan in the wilderness (Luk 4:1-13). It is, therefore, a valuable weapon of offense and defense. (Notice it is a sword with two edges, offensive and defensive).
          • Eph 6:17 tells us that the sword is the Word of God which divides truth from error, and out of His mouth comes a two-edged sword. (Heb 4:12 Rev 1:16.)
            • Joh 1:1,14 tells us that Jesus is the Word of God.
            • Therefore, the Word of God, the authority of Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit combine to make the sword of the Spirit a powerful weapon.
        • Sandals, shod with the Gospel of Peace
          • Read Rom 10:15
          • Read Eph 2:14
            • Jesus Christ is our peace having made peace for us with God.
            • This is the message of the gospel (the good news). Witnessing everywhere you go about God’s peace through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.
          • Maintain peace with all men everywhere as much as you can. (Rom 14:19)
      • Conclusions:
        • Notice that there is no armor for the back. Therefore, do not run away from the enemy!
          • Have your foundation in the Word of God.
          • Know what armor you have and how to use it.
        • Notice that these are all defensive weapons except for the Sword of the Spirit.
        • The armor of God is put on in prayer (Eph 6:18).
          • Aspects of prayer:
            • Read Eph 6:18 and Phi 4:6
              • Adoration
              • = praise and worship

              • Confession
              • = confession of sin

              • Thanksgiving
              • = thanks to God for blessings

              • Petition
              • = requests

              • Supplication
              • = a plea for God’s ordained order to appear.

                • A view of what things ought to be but aren’t.
                • A prayer to bring God’s supernatural reality into man’s reality.
          • Read Luk 11:5-10.
            • The Greek words for “ask”, “seek”, and “knock” means keep on asking, keep on seeking, and keep on knocking. It is like pushing a boulder over a cliff. You keep pushing on it and gaining an inch at a time.
            • In the Old Testament, it is like a tribal border that isn’t where it ought to be but has been crossed over or removed by the enemy. This is an on-going kind of prayer.
