1 SAMUEL 26
Lesson #26
INTEGRITY IN PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS
- Memory Verse: Psalms 15:1,3
- Why would strangers seek betrayal?
- These people had made the decision earlier to betray David in 1Sam 23:19-24.
- We often make a judgment in a relationship situation and take up a reproach or an offense against another.
- Biblical examples:
- Judas and Doeg.
- Read Psa 15:3
- This is one of the most frequently violated scriptural principles.
- Sometimes the cause is just be we are not supposed to judge.
- What is the proper response?
- We are to be a peacemaker
- Read Mat 5:9
- How are we to do this?
- Bring two disagreeing persons together to settle the differences between them. It does not mean mediation as a judge between the two where we take one side over the other.
- The only offense that we should take up is that of Christ. (1Tim 4:10 Heb 11:26)
- The believer should be careful in joining causes and taking up international offenses against other groups, people, or nations.
- Read 1Sam 26:2-20 The last meeting between Saul and David
- ¿Who is who? These people play an important part in Davids life later.
- Abner = He was Sauls cousin and the captain of Sauls army.
- When Saul died he obtained an allegiance of all the tribes with the exception of Judah for Ishbosheth (2Sam 2:8-10). During the civil war which followed Sauls death, he led the campaign to put Ishbosheth on the throne. However, there were insinuations that he was aiming for the throne, so Ishbosheth dropped him. (2Sam 3:7) He then offered to win all of Israel to Davids side, but he was assassinated by Joab when Abner killed his brother, Asahel, in self-defense.
- Abishai, Joab, and Asahel = These three were brothers, all nephews of David. They were high up in Davids army.
- Joab became the commander-in-chief of Davids army when David was king.
- He carried out Davids plan to kill Uriah, the husband of Bathsheba.
- He also had a hand in the death of Davids son, Absalom, in spite of Davids contrary order. Because of that David replaced Joab with Amasa, but Joab killed Amasa. Later Joab supported Adonijah for the throne instead of Solomon after Davids death.
- What kind of person is Abishai in this chapter?
- He was loyal (6)
- He was courageous (6)
- He is worldly in his outlook of Gods ways. (8)
- Not all circumstances that work out a certain way are Gods will.
- God will not violate scripture to answer your prayers your prayers.
- God does not want us to violate scripture to be in His will.
- Read 1Sam 24:6
- Read 1Sam 26:9
- Davids response to authority (9-11)
- David is consistent. His attitude is the same as it was in 1Sam 24.
- Read 1Sam 26:21-25
- Sauls response:
- The question is, did David believe Saul?
- Read 1Sam 27:1
- Summary:
- Important principles in this chapter:
- Do not take up an offense against another person.
- Have a proper attitude toward authority.
- God will not violate scripture for your and He does not expect you to violate scripture for Him.
