PSALMS 8
LESSON #6
TRIUMPH OF THE SON OF MAN
MEMORY VERSE: PSALMS 8:9
READ PSALMS 8:1-9 THE TRIUMPH OF THE SON OF MAN
THE MUSICAL INSCRIPTION SAYS, “TO THE CHIEF MUSICIAN UPON GITTITH, A PSALM OFDAVID”.
WHAT IS A GITTITH? AN INSTRUMENT LIKE THE GUITAR.
THIS PSALM BEGINS AND ENDS WITH THE SAME PRAISE TO GOD THOUGH THE REASONS FOR THAT PRAISEARE DIFFERENT IN VERSE 1 THAN THEY IN VERSE 9..
“O LORD, OUR LORD, HOW EXCELLENT IS THY NAME IN ALL THE EARTH.” (1, 9)
THE PRAISE IN VERSE 1:
REMEMBER THAT THE FIRST 40 PSALMS ARE THE “GENESIS SECTION” OF THE BOOK.THEREFORE, WE WILL PERIODICALLY SEE THINGS THAT PERTAIN TO THE BOOK OF GENESIS.
THE FIRST VERSE BEGINS WITH THIS PRAISE BECAUSE WHEN GOD CREATED ADAM HE GAVE ADAMAUTHORITY OVER THIS EARTH. (GEN 1:28 GEN 2:15, 19-20)
HOWEVER, BECAUSE OF SIN ADAM LOST MANS AUTHORITY OVER THE EARTH. THROUGH THE FIRSTSIN
MAN SOLD THIS AUTHORITY TO SATAN WHO BECAME THE GOD OF THIS WORLD. (2COR 4:4)
THE PRAISE IN VERSE 9:
THE PRAISE IS REPEATED BECAUSE IN THE END, THROUGH JESUS CHRIST, MAN REGAINS AUTHORITYOVER THIS EARTH IN THE MILLENNIAL KINGDOM OF JESUS CHRIST WHEN WE RULE AND REIGN WITH HIM.MAN WILL AGAIN HAVE REASON TO PRAISE GOD BECAUSE HIS REDEMPTION PLAN HAS RESTOREDEVERYTHING THAT ADAM LOST AND MORE.
NOTICE THAT DAVID SAYS, “O LORD, OUR LORD” (1)
HE IS NOT JUST SOME DISTANT GOD OUTSIDE OF CREATION. HE IS “OUR” LORDPERSONALLY. THERE IS A COVENANT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GOD, THE CREATOR, AND PUNY, WEAK MAN.
THERE IS NO “SELAH” (STOP AND THINK ABOUT THAT!) PLACED HERE, BUT IT IS WORTHSTOPPING AND THINKING ABOUT THAT BECAUSE IT GIVES YOU AN AWESOME FEELING ABOUT GOD WHO WASMINDFUL OF MAN TO TAKE NOTICE OF OUR CONDITION.
THE FIRST WORD FOR “LORD” IN THIS VERSE IS “JEHOVAH” THE GOD WHO MAKESCOVENANTS WITH HIS PEOPLE. THE SECOND WORD FOR “LORD” IN THIS VERSE IS”ADONAY” WHICH MEANS = “SOVEREIGN” OR “MASTER” WHICHSTRESSES GODS DOMINION OVER CREATION.
“WHEN I CONSIDER THE HEAVENS, THE WORK OF THY FINGERS…” (3)
ROM 1:20 TELLS US THAT MAN CAN KNOW THERE IS A GOD BY OBSERVING CREATION.
“THE WORK OF THY FINGERS” =
THIS TELLS US THAT THE WORK OF CREATION IS VERY DELICATE, INTRICATE, AND PERFECT LIKE THESMALL FINGER WORK OF KNITTING, CROCHETING, OR SEWING A VERY INTRICATE PICTURE. EACH KNOTAND PIECE OF THREAD IS IN THE RIGHT POSITION TO HOLD IT ALL TOGETHER.
THE PROPHETIC INTERPRETATION:
THE PROPHETIC INTERPRETATION IS OF PRIMARY IMPORTANCE IN THIS PSALM BECAUSE PSALMS 8 IS AMESSIANIC PSALM (A PSALM ABOUT THE MESSIAH), IT IS CALLED “MESSIANIC” BECAUSE ITIS QUOTED IN THE NEW TESTAMENT WITH DIRECT REFERENCE TO JESUS CHRIST, THE MESSIAH. THISPSALM IS QUOTED 3 TIMES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT. WE NEED TO SEE THE CONTEXT OF THESEQUOTATIONS:
READ MAT 21:1-17 THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY OF JESUS INTO JERUSALEM
JUST BEFORE THE CRUCIFIXION, JESUS ENTERS JERUSALEM IN FULFILLMENT OF MANY PROPHECIES. BYFULFILLING THESE PROPHECIES, HE CLAIMS TO BE THE MESSIAH AND OFFERS HIMSELF TO THE PEOPLE.MAT 21:11 TELLS US THE PREVAILING VIEW OF THE PEOPLE.
THEY DID NOT SEE HIM AS THE MESSIAH. IT IS SAID THAT THEY SAW HIM ONLY AS A PROPHET.
MAT 21:9 AND 16 IS THE PART THAT IS QUOTED FROM PSALMS 8:2.
“OUT OF THE MOUTH OF BABES AND SUCKLINGS HAST THOU ORDAINED STRENGTH…” (PSA8:2)
SOME PEOPLE KNEW WHO HE WAS EVEN THOUGH MOST OF THE PEOPLE DID NOT. THE COMPLETEFULFILLMENT, WHEN THE JEWS RECOGNIZE HIM AS THEIR MESSIAH, WILL BE AT THE SECOND COMING.
READ 1COR 15:20-28 THE TRIUMPHANT RESURRECTION
1COR 15:27 IS THE PART THAT IS QUOTED FROM PSALMS 8:6.
“…THOU HAST PUT ALL THINGS UNDER HIS FEET” (PSA 8:6)
JESUS GAINED A GREAT VICTORY OVER DEATH WHEN HE
WAS RESURRECTED FROM THE DEAD. HOWEVER, WE DO
NOT SEE ALL THINGS PUT UNDER HIS FEET TODAY. THIS PART WAITS FOR THE SECOND COMING WHEN HEWILL ESTABLISH HIS KINGDOM ON THIS EARTH FOR 1000 YEARS. (THE MILLENNIUM).
READ HEB 2:5-8 THE TRIUMPHANT PURPOSE AND POSITION OF JESUS CHRIST
HEB 2:5-8 IS A QUOTE FROM PSA 8:4-6.
“…WHAT IS MAN THAT THOU ART MINDFUL OF HIM?” (PSA 8:4)
BECAUSE OF GODS LOVE, MAN IS GIVEN GRACE AND PARDON. IT IS NOT BECAUSE MAN DESERVEDIT, BUT BECAUSE GOD CHOSE IT.
THE WORD FOR MAN HERE IS A WORD THAT STRESSES MANS MORTAL WEAKNESS. DAVID IS AMAZEDTHAT GOD EVEN THINKS ABOUT MAN.
“…AND THE SON OF MAN THAT THOU VISITEST HIM” (PSA 8:4)
GOD SENT HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST, TO COME DOWN TO THIS EARTH AS A MAN.
“FOR THOU HAST MADE HIM A LITTLE LOWER THAN THE ANGELS…” (PSA 8:5)
ADAM WAS ORIGINALLY CREATED IN A POSITION LOWER THAN THE ANGELS IN THAT MAN DID NOT HAVETHE CONSTANT PRESENCE OF GOD IN HEAVEN. WHEN JESUS CHRIST BECAME A MAN, HE LOWERED HIMSELFTO MANS LEVEL.
“…AND HAST CROWNED HIM WITH GLORY AND HONOR” (PSA 8:5)
BECAUSE OF HIS OBEDIENCE TO GODS PLAN OF REDEMPTION, JESUS WAS CRUCIFIED. THEREFORE,GOD CROWNED HIM WITH GLORY AND HONOR. HOWEVER, THIS ALSO REFERS TO BELIEVERS IN JESUSCHRIST. IN OTHER WORDS, HIS GLORY AND HONOR IS PASSED TO US THROUGH JESUS CHRIST (1PET2:9). THEREFORE, THROUGH JESUS CHRIST WE ARE RAISED TO A POSITION HIGHER THAN THE ANGELS.
“THOU MADEST HIM TO HAVE DOMINION OVER THE WORKS OF THY HANDS; THOU HAST PUT ALLTHINGS UNDER HIS FEET” (PSA 8:6)
ALL THINGS WILL BE GIVEN TO JESUS CHRIST TO RULE AT HIS SECOND COMING. AND THRU JESUSCHRIST WE BELIEVERS WILL RULE AND REIGN WITH HIM. (REV 5:10)
IN LIGHT OF THESE NEW TESTAMENT VERSES, WHAT DOES PSALM 8 TELL US ABOUT JESUS CHRIST?
1. HE HUMBLED HIMSELF TO COME TO THIS EARTH AND DIE FOR US.
2. SOME DAY HE WILL RULE AND REIGN WITH POWER AND AUTHORITY
3. WHEN HE REIGNS IN THE MILLENNIAL KINGDOM, EVERYONE WILL KNOW HIM AND HONOR HIM.
4. HE WILL HAVE ULTIMATE AUTHORITY OVER EVERYTHING AS THE TRIUMPHANT KING.
5. BELIEVERS WILL REIGN TRIUMPHANTLY WITH HIM.
SUMMARY:
WE SAW THAT PSALM 2 WAS A MESSIANIC PSALM ABOUT REBELLIOUS MAN AND THE REDEMPTION PLANNEDBY JESUS CHRIST THROUGH HIS FIRST COMING TO THIS EARTH. THAT REDEMPTION WAS ACCOMPLISHEDTHROUGH THE CRUCIFIXION. NOW WE SEE PSALM 8 IS A MESSIANIC PSALM ABOUT THE SECOND COMINGOF JESUS CHRIST AND HIS TRIUMPHANT KINGDOM TO COME. “O LORD, OUR LORD, HOW EXCELLENTIS YOUR NAME IN ALL THE EARTH!”
